The first GSD I bought myself died suddenly at only two, so my oldest GSD is the old gal I have now, 9 and a half and looking amazing. My 8 year old is not looking as good as her.

They have eaten over their lifetime Natural Balance, Fromm, Canidae, TOTW, raw, in that order.

My first GSD, Jess, was an American-lines girl who passed due to hemangiosarcoma one week to the day after her 14th birthday.  She was fed Blue Seal Ultra 27 for the first 5 years of her life, and Iams Mini Chunks or Purina ONE Chicken & Rice for the remainder.

Hexe was Kirschental lines, and I lost her last February at the age of 14 years, 4 months and 18 days. She was fed Iams Mini Chunks from 9 weeks of age onward.

Suess is presently 15 years, 10 months old, of unknown bloodlines as she was an 8 month old rescue when she came to me; she's been fed Iams Mini Chunks from that time through present.

All also ate vegetables, fruit, leftover meat/poultry, eggs and dairy products; I feed adults two meals/day, each with a tablespoon of plain yogurt mixed in, and my dogs get 1000 mg ascorbic acid and 1200 mg Omega 3 fish oil caps twice a day as well.

My mom put her lab mix to sleep about 3 years ago. He was a little over 18 years old. Great dog. ( I know he wasnt a GSD...lol...but he was a great dog)

He was fed Sturdy dog food for about half his life then I think he was fed Iams for most of the remainder.

The oldest GSD that I had was 12.5 years old. He dies July of 2009. He was a great dog. He was fed Natural Balance, Natural Choice and Premium Edge during his life time. That doesnt include the treats...lol.

my oldest is 12 + and still gets around real good. her hearing and sight isn't what it used to be . i love her dearly and i will miss her when she is gone. she is an american x ck, cross. i fed her science diet and raw chicken and beef. for the last 4 years i have fed her iams with the raw. she has never been housed in a kennel except for short syays when we were on vacation. she roams through the woods and swims in the lake.  great dog!!!

Nice to see that there are healthy long lived GSDs.  My remaining ones are 6 and 8 years old and after losing Loki at 9 (2 days shy of his 10th birthday) I am hoping that these two will be with me a long time.  Thanks for the encouraging news and keep up the good work

Don't hold me to it, but I think I recall the Maineiche dogs were fed Royal Canin, and the Arolser-Holz dogs as well, back in the 90's. Of course RC foods in Europe were very dfferent back then, many formulas we don't get here, "mixed and matched" (Flocken + various protein souce recipes) for custom feeding... nothing like what we get today.

My dogs that Ilost last year were 14 1/2 yrs and 16 years old.  I fed them Pedigree their whole life.  I got them when I was a poor grad. student and never switched to a better food as it suited them well. The 16 year old had no health problems until the last year when she developed mylopathy.  The male had mild HD, which got worse with age, but he was alwayws able to walk.

Vianden, absolutely gorgeous pups.  Anja and Lea have the same head and eye expressions my Loki did.
