I am betting that some puss from the pyo spilled out around the uterine stump......

Since the peristaltic action of the bowel was lost *before* the spay, that's not possible, PowerHaus.

My bad Hexe, I do not see where they said it was lost before. Other thread said they did a spay and this new thread posted after the OP's first thread made me believe that this issue was post spay also the title of the thread says stump remains......as in uterine stump that would also lead me to think this is a new problem. Hi. To clarify..we noticed diminshed bowel function prior to spay (only a few days prior however). No movements possible. She had either a ruptured anal gland or fistula for the first time EVER which may have started or contributed to the problem of diminished bowel movements . There had been no hx of an anal issues ever. A few days later, after ultrasounds and swabs we spayed due to pyo. We don't know what started first. Obviously the infection had already started. The anal infection or rupture or fistula happened along side the infection and through off confusing blood counts etc. It is almost like there was an infection that was spreading to diff parts. Mastitis. Anal issue. Pyo. All at the exact same time for the very FIRST time. Thanks for the time and thoughts.

 How is she????????

by kmaot on 08 January 2011 - 19:01

Still in ICU. And still catheterized to "rest" her bladder. It seems that she has now had 2 runny poops (she is still on softeners) AND is hungry AND has not thrown any food up. She is very hungry and eager to eat. All bowels emptied during stump removal and exploratory work. Bladder function cannot be assessed with catheter in her but they want another day to rest the bladder before pulling it out. No culture or path reports back yet. Prelim report on bowel report was neg but it is prelim only. The Drs still say they have no idea what or why.

These are all good signs kmaot. We will all keep hoping that she continues to improve. Get some rest.

Stools are getting slightly more formed. Still await path and culture but I am thinking we will all end up negative. The question may be...if she does continue to improve...WHY the bowel and bladder action was impaired with the pyo? As she was on Baytril for days before cultures etc were done...perhaps we will not know. Vets are wondering whether it was an overdistention of the bladder resulting in a lack of decent function (forget term)and I wonder if same can happen with bowels? She is still on motility and bladder drugs so I do not know what will happen after catheter is removed tomorrow or how long she will remain on the motility drugs.

Pyometra is a very serious infection that can be fatal if not caught in time.  It can very quickly become a life and death fight to treat the infection and save the dog's life.  I suspect that the infection spread past the uterus into her bowel, or at least affected the bowel.  she probably had some septicemia - either way sounds like she is improving, that is excellent news.
