Our boy is show line (German,) and his natural protection instinct is definitely enough for home protection/family protection, but I wouldn't consider him nearly enough "drivey" for "real work" such as LEO or Military work.
I agree, however, that it depends on the specific dog. Just because a dog is of working lines doesn't mean it is automatically cut out for "real work."
@FlashBang
can we build drive ? If yes then how ?
@Manjeet Kumar - prey drive, food drive, agression???
Every dog has a different mix of drives. Some are lazy, some are very driven.....
To the extent that the dog has it, it can be brought out and developed.
Drives that are needed for protection work, for patrolling the territory.... Can this kinda drive to work be built ?
I have three showlines all are protective yet stable and all would protect me in any way needed. I have full confidence in them and their ability.
Manjeet, I do not believe you can "build" drive, it is either there genetically or is not. You can train in ways that encourage drive to be expressed and you can learn to channel the dog's drives into specific behaviors.
@GSDNewbie
I respect your confidence in them and their ability but do not trust them blindly..
Have you done some tests on their ability ? Like decoy is attacking you and your show line gsds attacked the decoy and knocked the decoy down and protected you from the decoy... Just barking is not enough. Do the test on them and then trust...
@VKGSDs
Ok.. Is it possible to recognise drives to work(protection,tracking,patrolling) in the puppies ??
Yes it is and fairly predictable based on the pedigree/combination. If you're not familiar with the lines and temperament traits of the dogs you're interested in, be sure to find a reputable breeder who understands what you want and can provide that.
Manjeet, i agree with you about the testing aspect of the dog. I have a Sch 3 male who has a great bite, even with a hidden sleeve, but it was merely a game to him. I found an ex LEO K9 trainer and started working with him in different scenarios. Even with that, I was not sure. Then Slamdunc (aka Jim) on here suggested using a muzzle and he provided so much info. Doing so made all the difference in my dog and my confidence in him!
Btw: he has great drive.must last week, he literally destroyed a steel door, removed the doorkmow and frame around the door to get outside to our female in heat!
