I received a washout, that originally came from them, he just needed more time to mature. He was very ball driven and basically a great dog. I did adopt him out to an everyday family...

Seems to be some conflicting information here. As someone whose relative adopted a dog from Lackland, I can tell you they DO adopt out dogs to the general public.
Here is the overall information about their MWD adoption program:
http://www.lackland.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-100108-068.pdf
1. Lackland does not "sell" dogs to people. You cannot go and purchase a 100% obedience trained, specialty-trained dog from them, but you CAN adopt out dogs that washed out for any number of reasons: not enough drive, poor recovery rate from being startled, etc. There are also two types of adoptions: retired WD and washed-out WD.
2. You would have to contact Lackland directly.

3. There is an order in which they go for adopting out dogs: LEO or other government agencies, dogs' former handlers, and finally the public.
4. There are no fees associated with the adoption of the dogs, but you (and I believe your family although my nephew doesn't have children, etc.) have to fly out to meet the dog once or twice prior to adopting, and once you have been approved, you are 100% responsible for all costs associated with transporting the dogs to your home/kennel.

I live in San Antonio, and last week at the dog park a guy had a retired GSD from Lackland. The guy was in the military and teaches the handlers and the dog was a demo dog to assist in training. He adopted the dog as his personal pet but he is in the military. If I run into him I will ask more info. But honestly living here that is the 1st time I have heard of someone with a retired dog.

1) YES...you CAN adopt a wash out from lackland. IT CANT BE RESOLD AS A POLICE DOG!!!!
2) The person who used to be in charge of that program was Rod Sparkowich. That was a few months back. Since then Lackland has revamped everything and I do not know who is in charge. I would contact Stewert Hilliard OR Tim Bartlet the consignment buyer or Jimmy Dalton, they will now who is in chrage of it. I have a few clients that has washouts from lackland.
3) Also, DPS (state troopers) get there dog from lackland. The washouts.

Thanks for all the great info. I will be filling out the app I suppose and see what comes of it. I read somewhere that it takes a year to get a dog. If thats the case I probably wont wait. For the cost of airfare, I think a healthy well socialized dog is worth it.

If you want to PM me I have some helpful information. I recently helped the Tulsa German Shepherd Rescue place a Malinois from Lackland that had fallen into a not so good situation. I have a good relationship with the dog procurement department as a result of this dog.

Bhaugh,
With all the info that commenters have given, if you still have questions get back to me. My friend , amother handler out of Maine just picked up a pup from Lackland @ two/three weeks ago. He did not wait a year. He's on FB and we have chatted and he has pics. I don't know all the details but I know he is very happy with the dog. If need be I can get more info at your request or get you in touch with him?
