I've passed on some suggestions/questions, but I'm waiting to hear back from my friend in the area.

I've been told he's in the hands of someone who plans to keep him if his previous owner are not found. They were going to check for a microchip and tattoo. So, he is going to be taken care of. Unfortunately, I don't know any more than that.

He presents a very good outline considering his condition. Stacked out with a little weight he would make a handsome companion-- depending on his temperament and character. A nice sable working colored dog. Do your best to find a home for this poor soul. These are the forgotten ones.

K9 IS MISSING A DOG SINCE NOV 13 2010 A SABLE COLOR SHEPARD NAMED BANE LAST SEEN WEARING A lead is made of nylon. He has eaten them in the past, just for fun. In addition, I had him on the 'dead ring' of the check chain. This means that it is not able to tighten around his neck and he can slip his head out of it. He has done this numerous times in the past so it is not a concern to me.
Bane is trained in narcotics detection, tracking, article searches, LPOP, aggression, handler protection and crowd control. This is just a small part of what he is trained to do.  Any way we can get the numbers of the tattoo in his ear?  we've been looking for such a dog.
Can't be sure from the pic, as he's lost so much weight. We need the tattoo numbers!

 K9 Bane of Mi. State Police, Alpena post has been missing since 11/13/10.
He's a 4 year old, sable male with a tattoo in his ear. I don't have the tatt numbers,(6 digits, numbers & letters) Have a message in to his handler now. 
He was lost in the woods during hunting season. Thinking a hunter could have picked him up,thinking he was a stray, then dumped him when they found out he belonged to police.
When last seen, Bane had not been fixed.
