I saw three Labs running the street the other day.  They all belong to the same stupid owner that I dealt with in the past.  One of the labs was one who attacked one of my dogs.  The dogs didn't see me this time, though they know I can run them off now.  But almost amazingly a sherrif drives up the hill and I stopped him to tell him about the dogs.  He suggested setting some kind of trap for the dogs since I told him about how they had gotten on our property already and had been harassing other people's dogs and animals already that day.  He pretty much gave me the okay to shoot them if threatened, or set a trap for them and animal control would take them away..

If is sure aweful funny Law Enforcement has a way of handing the responsibility off to us instead of them getting the job designated to the property authorities which is Animal Control....we have a big mess here in Texas over the same thing....dogs terriorizing people, property and dogs and no one wants to do anything..Says there is a jurisdiction problem..one overlaps the other...so the JUDGE will hear the case and the gavel will be hammered..

SAW 6 dogs in two day running at large  , big dogs   ...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

All of you are right. Not worth getting hurt over.  Also great point, what about a child?  I was just talking to my good neighbor about this very point, because he has 2 little girls ages 7 and 9, they come over all the time to help me chore and visit.  I have watched them grow up.

Also, I should have never headed out the door the way I did.  Regardless of the dogs trying to get a calf.  And yes, we can shoot them here if they go after stock or someone.  It was just that moment of looking out the door and seeing them go after the calves.  I was not thinking.  I have no compunction to shoot the dogs, would prefer not too.  But if  that is the"no choice position", well then one needs to do just that.

My brain was just focused on saving the calves, never thought about them turning around on me, when I know better.  I know better.   I will not make that mistake twice.

You know what is sad, if this was my dogs, I would be so embarrassed, apologetic, and make sure everything was okay, if I needed to compensate for stock I would do that.  I am suspect of these people and the dogs, lots of scars, spiked collars, and chewed up ears.

Thanks for the input, it could be any of us.

 MarineMom,
OMG, YOU BE CAREFUL.  Like you , I am not against the breed, however when they are allowed to run
loose by idiotic , careless, and irresponsible owners...then I get my hackles up.
We have a HUGE problem with them here in California.  Over 90% of all shelter dogs are PB or bull mixes..
and yet they want to crucify all dog owners because shelters are over crowded.

I had a similar circumstance walking my GSD female, on lead, law abiding, coming home from a run.
Some moron neighbor decided he "needed" a pit bull.  We passed his open gate, not realizing he'd acquired the dog, and here it came....right for us.  My GSD stood her ground, and went forward.
I started yelling to to the out of sight owner to come and get your......   *&^%ing dog! I kept yelling until the moron walked out the gate, calling it's name...which the young PB utterly ignored.
My GSD was going crazy, and I was poised with my pepper spray...(hoping that would do it)
Finally he walked out and grabbed him by the collar.

I was so upset that I called him everything but Sweetheart and his dog.  HE GOT MAD AT ME,  for YELLING AT AND THREATENING TO USE PEPPER SPRAY ON HIS  BULL .  What?
I reminded him, in no uncertain terms that the damn dog was OFF lead OFF property and he had no control...and came at US.
The MENSA member owner, lol, was still yelling at me, as he got the dog and closed his gate.

Only two months prior in another part of the county, there was a PB attack on a Mom and little girl walking to a park.  The dog tore the 3 y/o from the mother's arms, and it took over 350 staples to put her , sort of together.  They were asking anyone finding muscle or skin of the child at the crime scene to please bring it to the emergency room so they could try an piece her back together....I don't know if she survived.

Defend yourself.....these idiots that have to have these  and then let them loose,  don't care about you, or anyone.  Defend yourself by whatever means necessary.   You may not get another chance, nor may a child or someone on a bike or on a horse or just walking.
BE CAREFUL
Kathy

I beleve YR stated MM was a retired LEO? If so, than I'm sure you have a plan for a second meeting of sorts. If I misunderstood then here's some ideas. Not sure how the law is outlined where you are at but the majority of law enforcement can only act if the situation is criminal. And no crime has been committed, now before evryone gets all riled up, I understand how everyone feels and I would feel the same way.

Another thing is the agency  (L.E.) itself might have policies, rules and regulations that prohibit responding to those situations. And maybe those situations are governed by A.C. I don't know. Our A.C. would not repond unless there was an actual bite, injury or the animal was caught/contained. No more no less.

Here's a couple of ideas, first for MM and then YR. MM, if you are so set against shooting the dog then you have just limited yourself to rectifying the situation. Unfortunately you don't know the full scope of where the situation could've gone. That was interrupted by your good neighbor!  If you are set against shooting the dog here are your options 1. By a paint ball rifle/pistol and practice. If you have the rifle it sits at whatever side of the house you encountered the dog going after your calves. A pistol you keep on your side. By NO MEANS am I saying this will STOP the dog! It might, it might not? But the proof will be there when you file a complaint. (As long as you hit your target). Not sure how your A.C. works but when a "certain" amount of paperwork is documented then court action can move swifter. If you CAN shoot the dog have a weapon standing by. PREPARE. If all that isn'y you contact a dog club, or put and add looking for someone with a bite suit. Once meeting with that person explain the situation and see if they will oblige you by noosing the nuisance. Then you'll have the dog waiting for A.C.     ??? If you were closer my friends and I would assist........

YR, Not sure how hi-tech you are but if yo can get close enough to the sob for him to rant Staples has a voice activated pen. That's right a pen. (Now I'm sure there are a million other gadgets also but if he's in front of you and won't hurt or intimidate you, pens in front pocket and he's singing. Any ways, just some ideas. I'm sure there are many more. Goog luck and keep us advised.

MarineMom,
One thing I have no tolerance for is lazy, stupid dog owners who don't keep their dogs under control or who use the dogs as an "ego booster".  I was walking my 2 dogs the other day when the neighbor's Bulldog/Pitt mix came running across the road (almost got hit by a truck) and charged my 2 dogs.  I was yelling at the owner to get her f***ing dog (I was not the calm dog owner/handler that I always strive to be I'm embarrassed to say) and the fight was on.  I let loose of my leashes and she just stood there as I tried to break up the fight (yes I know, absolutely stupid and I have the scars to show from breaking up another dog fight, I never learn and am protective of my dogs).  I managed to grab the hind legs of her dog and called off mine so the fight was stopped.  I have kindly mentioned to this owner in the past that she might want to consider fencing her dog or using some other means of keeping her dog safely in her yard and she answered "he never runs out of the yard".  So this time she said "I came over because I don't want you to think I am one of those brainless dog owners"

I do know where I used to live, livestock owners were allowed to shoot "loose" dogs on their property that were "harassing the livestock".  I am sorry you had to go through that and your neighbors sound like winners.  Just be careful, like my husband always says "you can't fix stupid", and stupid people have a way of believing it is everyone elses' fault.

That is a really good question to ponder, "to shoot or not to shoot"?

Now like I said I have NO compunction about shooting them.  I can do that without a problem.  Now there are laws about discharging a weapon.  Since I am more rural, we CAN shoot to protect ourselves and our livestock from dogs.

Next time, if their is a next time, and I am sure there will be.  That is what I am going to do.  That big blue male really surprised me, ( but I should have know better ).  I always have a weapon handy.  When this happened I was baking for the holidays, and just looked out the kitchen window to the out back, heard all the animals fussing.

Funny thing Victory mentioned a bull.  They also have a Texas long horn with a two foot rack, that is named IKE.  When the female owner of the pit bulls had to come fetch him out of my back pasture.  I was trying to help her.  That big boy was walking towards me and she said don't run just walk up and put the rope around him.  For some common sense reason my brain just could NOT make my body go towards him....LOL.  I thought to myself she is serious. I also thought ,this is what happens to people when they have one brain cell left from tweak laced with toluene and Drano.  Now, I also own bulls, Angus and Jersey.

Yes, the Sheriffs Office refers this out to Animal Control, or can take a phone report for the killing of livestock.   Now if you shoot the dog or if the dog bites you they will come out with Animal Control, at some point or some day.

The dis-hearting part of all this is how the owners of these dogs behaved.  They and their dogs share the same nasty temperament.

Also my place is all fenced, these dogs came in under the fence.

I havent read the entire thread, but would you consider getting a can of Canine OC  (pepperspray)

at least then you don't have the complete guilt of destroying a dog because of idiot owners and the dogs will learn a valuable (though painful) lesson about coming on to your property or charging you for that matter

Scarlet Akai.

I agree with you.  I have put out a can of my duty OC pepper spray ( also leaves a glow in the dark orange color ) on the counter.  My second choice will be shoot them, unless they are already are on the livestock, then I need to.  And you are also right that I would feel guilty.

Great though, I am taking your advice.
