orally, or pill form says it can take several "treatments" to fully terminate a litter?

shoot it, ingest it, all the same, its a dangerous drug, and used enough times, it may kill or do irreversible harm to the bitch.  if a litter is unplanned, either wait and see if the bitch is even bred, or have her spayed if she's an intended pet.

the vets in my area wouldn't even suggest this drug.  my bitch was given the injection form by her breeder where she was staying for a while.  she hopped over a 6ft concrete wall and was bred by her sire, breeder took her in for the shot by her vet.

this drug can ruin a bitch if you intend on using her as a brood female.

Well, I am sorry if you have had issues with this treatment!  Maybe your vet didn't do it correctly!  I have seen it used in a reproduction specialist office NUMEROUS......hundreds of times and the ONLY undesireable side effect was that the dog drank an excessive amount water and then urinated alot!

But...alas, I must concede because you all think that god was born in Slovakia............and I am just a babbling nobody!

no, I don't think God was born in Slovakia, me and Hans don't see eye to eye on several issue's.  but his ethics are not one of them.  and he has rarely been rude to anyone on this forum, compared to some members.

my dog was given this drug by a old, very experienced vet. and most of the vets in my area are large animal vets, mainly horses and cattle now, the small animal vets out here aren't worth the paper their degree is printed on.

Oh yes. It's a commonly known fact that the means of the chemical's entrance into the body is the key determining factor in its safety. This is why I only snort heroin and never ever shoot it. It's healthier that way.

I had a buyer call me frantic about an oops w/the dog I sent him and the male he purchased with that bitch in mind. Super ped, super complementary temperaments and physical types as well. She's a difficult dog in every aspect, and just to trick him, she came into heat NINE WEEKS EARLY and it got missed due to several very understandable circumstances. He said a friend had told him to give her the Dexamethasone but he wasn't comfortable with it and wanted my opinion. I said HELL NO! Let her have those puppies.

I got news for y'all..............Mother Nature says they're ready far before OFA does. Who do you really think knows better? If a dog is healthy, and having those pups is as safe as it could be for her, don't mess with nature.

Moral of the story- don't poison your dog to try to cover your mistakes. Own up to them and deal with them appropriately...not necessarily the easiest way and the best way to preserve your reputation, but by far the best thing for the dogs, which should ALWAYS be the priority.

BTW, in the "oops" I referred to, I got a hell of a nice breeding prospect out of it. I bought both the dam and the pups. Woweee.............what a nice "oops" they turned out to be.

LOL GSD pack!

Alot of trainers use Dexamethasone as a pre-race drug., an anti inflammatory.  Wow, these drugs sure get around.

My reproduction vet refuses to use this.  His opinion is that is it not safe and the risks outweigh the benefits.

Dexamethasone is given to cancer patients before they get chemo, to help reduce side effects. It also is used in terminal patients, to help give them some energy and reduce inflammation. It is a powerful corticosteroid, and the steroids are infamous for their side effects. Long term used thins the bones and damages the adrenal system, causing weight gain, moon face, hair growing where it shouldn't, and other side effects too numerous to list.

However, I don't see how a single large dose or several consecutive doses could cause long-term side effects. The drug is elimated from the body fairly quickly. It's long-term use that causes problems. I've been on a related drug, prednisone, several times for respiratory problems, and have not suffered any noticeable side effects after finishing the course of medication.

As for 'oop's breedings, sometimes even the best precautions fail. The dam of one of my dogs managed to open her kennel, and climb an 8 foot fence to get in with the stud! The breeder says she must be related to Harry Houdini!  It's just fortunate that the stud she chose was at least the same breed, and a breeding the owner might have chosen to do at a later date.
