I see plenty of good, tough GSD's and Mali's.  There not hard to find when you know where to look.  If you've been around a lot of GSD's and Malis, then you just aren't seeing the good ones.

TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH, THE PPL ARE TIERD OF BEING SCARED WHERE THEY LIVE AND IT TAKES A MORE PROTECTIVE DOG TO GET THE JOB DONE .I MY SELF HAVE BEEN AROUND ALL SORTS OF DOGS BUT FELL IN LOVE WITH THE PIT BULL TERRIER. MY DOGS WHERE RAISED IN A FAMILY SETTING SOME INSIDE SOME OUT. AND THE DOGS RAISED INSIDE WHERE MORE PROTECTIVE BY FAR. IN THE 50S AND 60S OLDTIME DOGMEN CULLED DOGS THAT FIT SUCH DESCRIPTION.BUT NOW A DAYS ONLY A FEW CARRY ON THAT TRADITON. DOGS ARE BIGGER,STRONGER AND MORE PROTECTIVE THEN EVER. AND YOUR GOING SEE MORE BEFORE YOU'LL SEE LESS . BUT TO ANWER YOUR Q. ADAMS BUDDY MAC IS WHAT I WOULD CALL BOMB PROOF SAME AS IF YOU WERE REFERING TO A HORSE MY DOGS LOVE PPL AND WANT NOTHING MORE THAN TO BE THE CENTER OF ATTENTION.AND YOU MUST WATCH THE TAIL,LOL THEY CAN PUT AN EYE OUT WITH THAT THING. AN OLDTIMER ONCE SAID GOOD DOGS ARE WHERE YOU FIND THEM. AND I THINK THAT STILL STANDS TRUE TODAY.BUT IT SOUND AS IF YOUR NIEGHBOR NEED A TALLER FENCED IN YARD. HERE IN MONTANA WE PUT FENCES UP TO KEEP THINGS OUT NOT IN.

dogs with such temperament who's owners do not control usually end up dead.

a GSD acting that aggressive for no reason other then it wants someone else's trash would have a serious temperament fault. a GSD is bred to protect his owner and his owner's property, not a trash can down the street.

many years back, when we lived in the country, a neighbor had such dogs, she has a whole pack of aggressive dogs. her dogs were all well fed and groomed. they were beautiul and looked like purebreds.

all of my chickens were killed, my horses were attacked, my cat was killed, children were threatened, i was attacked...it was a very horrible 28 months!

my children (4 and 6 years old) were afraid of dogs for many years after they saw her dogs grab our cat and tear it in two - on our own front porch. I couldn't let my kids play in our yard without being armed with something to fend off the dogs. we built a fence.

she had a110 lb boxer. he would break through our fence, and tear open our trash cans that were on our back porch. we asked the owner  repeatedly to control her dogs, took her photos of her dog tearing up our trash, she said it wasn't her dog, we call animal control and begged them to at least talk to the owner but nothing worked. one evening as he was ripping into our trash again we tried to scare it off and he became aggressive. he met up with a 38 - dropped without a yelp. we took him to the vet to incinerate him the next morning. she came over by noon and asked it we had seen her dog, we said that there was a stray that became aggressive when it was getting our trash and it won't be bothering us ever again.

about a year later, a chow, chow of hers attacked me in my own front yard, I was walking back from checking the our mailbox. I was inbetween the mail box and the safey of my fenced yard. he had a hold of my leg when another neighbor came running with rifle and killed it.  this same dog was aggressive to his children a week before.

i went to the hospital - thank God i had just finished riding and was wearing leather boots and chaps! she called the police and she ended charged with many violations. she moved a few weeks later and the whole neighborhood rejoiced.

its very unfortunate that dogs have to pay when they are bred improperly, are not trained correctly and are allowed to run loose and terrorize neighborhoods. don't get me wrong, i truly love animals, especially dogs, and killing a dog is the worst possible outcome and is always so very horrible, but if it comes to a choice in between terrorized in my own yard and being safe - well, there isn't a much of a choice. especially when animal control is too busy and the police have better things to do.

tenmon...
When i lived in Europe and spend few summers out in the middle of no where in my grandmothers house she had dogs like that...no fear at all.... someone stabbed one of her dogs when it broke the chain it was on and attacked intruder, another dog tore tire off the motorcycle when a visitor came inside the yard..beating that dog with a stick did not make it let it go....but both dogs were as gentle as they could be with me...there was a wild factor to those dogs and my greek  grandma had strange beliefs to let the dogs go roam once in a great while to get in touch with their wild side...no one ever trained them, they were fed human food, half of loaf of bread, or fresh milk straight from the cow, chicken eggs, bones, etc...dogs were forever grateful and had no fear or anything...chased bulls and goats, ran next to motorcycles for miles (  grandparents/owners going to next town for provisions) and guarded side cart of motorcycle with food in it with their lives...same with purses..I seen my grandma leave a purse next to a dog when she went back in to the store to carry boxes out and told dog to watch it...dog growled at anyone who approached it...
I think now days we force our dogs to behave, to be social and friendly to trust people we trust and not follow their instincts...in a way this gives dogs access to parks, social gatherings, strangers and visitors...they rely on us to make a decision and there for no longer "tough".

...thats just my opinion...

A dog like that is a huge liability. What if it had encountered a small child or even a large man who does not know as much as you obviously do about how to handle such a situation? It sounds to me like there would be a good chance of yet another "dog attack" report to be filed.

If that sort of behavior is what makes a dog good or tough, then I don't think I would want one.

I guess I was at fault in my general write up.  I did not mean to make the dog that I tried chasing off with a shovel the focus of the question.  That was not it.  Most dogs that I have encountered rummaging through my garbage can when given a choice to flee or stand and fight, I would say 99% of them will flee.  Breeding?  Maybe not.  I have read over and over where many great breeders would indicate that most dogs will run, if given a chance to flee, when they are really threatened.  I have seen this on and off the field, even with top sch 3 working line dogs.

LadyFrost has some excellent thoughts here.  I think we have shifted the focus of our dog breeding program more towards dogs that will compete! But the true nature is very much masked in that are they just as good, with or without the training, in a natural surrounding to protect one's family?  Have we bred out the true aggressive nature of the dogs?

I reflect back on a friend I got a dog from his main stud dog.  This guy was in Nam and brought back a dog, old line....Racker, Olde starken, the old tough line dogs, that he got permission to bring back with him after his tour.  He used this dog to hunt and sniff out the enemy.  I got a son off him.  Naturally tough like this bloodhound.  No training.  There was a "perp" that the cops were chasing one night and he would cross the various backyards to hide.  I looked through my window and saw a bunch of cops lined up at the fence, fearing to go into my backyard with my dog holding them at bay!  I told them if they were affraid to go over the fence, do they think that the perp would!  They just left.

I see a lot of great sports dogs, both mals and GSD, but I really question the true protective nature of the vast majority.  So IMO when I see the ads and hear discussions about how great a line is, DDR, Czech, WG, etc. I just say would they be as great home without the commands, sleeve, etc.?  If so what are the lines you "guys" are touting to be these great dogs today?  Because for every Fero line dog, a Lord line, a tiekerhook, a Ben ju....etc.  I have seen my share of their worthless offsprings that were great on the field, but a woos in other environments.  Are they mainly trained monkeys?   Just ???????
