In one word - YES!!!

by BoCRon on 29 November 2010 - 03:11
Absolutely! A working(SchH, KNPV, Ring etc) title would be the cherry on top, but just about any title would make me happy if I were the breeder. I have mellowed I guess. I used to scoff at some titles, and while I wouldn't consider some titles an indication of a dog's worthiness to be bred, I do see it as time spent and something accomplished. The fact that an owner is spending time doing something like dock diving, which I wouldn't consider a GSD "thing" I would be pleased that the dog is with an owner who wants to spend time with the dog doing something other than feeding it cookies while they sat on a couch(although that can be rewarding in it's own way, too ;)).

Yes, very much yes. It's an indication the owner is doing something positive with thier dog, my previous pup. I have tried to reimburse the entry fees for some when they are starting out. Not all will accept reimbursement, which is their choice. I do like to make the offer and my way of saying thank you for your work. I am proud of all of what "my" puppies have done. Agility, Therapy Dog, CGC, BH, Sch1, Herding instinct. Each shows that they are being worked with and trained. Activily involved with their owners. That is what i like to see........

Absolutely!! Of course a loving home is first and foremost for my puppies but a loving, working home is even better!! I have been blessed, out of 8 puppies 5 have schutzhund tiltles, one is in CARDA training and one is training in herding and SDA. A pup from my first litter just took 3rd place at the USA Nationals in Carson City, that is a moment I will never forget, the emotions were overwhelming...

Then I guess I only care about the money.
If someone wants to title their dog, fine. Great. Wonderful. Have fun. As long as they take as good care of that dog as your average true animal lover does.
I would rather have 90% in pet homes never titled but cared for in the manner they deserve than have them in purely ego-driven sport homes where they will be used as nothing more than anatomical extensions for some (I think that was pretty delicate...;-) ) and kenneled except for training and trialing. Yuck. Then, these people get all the praise for titling their dog, and my question is whose dog is happier? Does the titled dog feel somehow superior? Does a dog care if he's titled? If they can do both, fantastic. But all too often, I don't see that happening. The "sport" dog or "working" dog suffers, IME.
There is no reason a good, balanced dog cannot both compete in a sport and be a real part of the family. I have very little tolerance (in case you guys hadn't noticed) for those who create these over-the-top unbalanced (not intense or extreme- I mean unbalanced, hectic, and unstable) dogs who will only be passable at sport and cannot live with their handlers off the field. Don't create instablity for the sake of points and ego and then punish the dog for what you've created.
The sport people I respect are dog people before sport people, and have mastered how to be fair to the dog while pursuing their own interests in the sport. They do it for fun, because they like the bond that comes with working w/their dogs, and not because of their own egos.
From a breeding standpoint, any breeder who cares more about their own notoriety from getting their pups titled than the dogs' genuine well-being is greedy- not the other way around.
Personally, when I find an active "pet" home qualified for one of my pups, I'm thrilled for the dog. Camping, hiking, kids, a real home, being part of everyday life and a constant companion and protector is THE life for a dog, IMO. Versatility is key, IMO. Any dog that we create who is not versatile enough to have a real life off the field should not be punished for the breeder's lack of foresight and/or integrity. I think it's very sad how many live lonely kennel lives, personally.

In answer to the question, YES! All of our breeding dogs are titled and breed surveyed. We breed no outside females that are not titled and/or do not have a hip/elbow rating. Three of our four males are Sch3, koered for life and are retired Police K-9's. The fourth male is 3 X Sch3 and KKL1 for life. We are proud that our working line dogs have good structure, movement and anatomy and our show line dogs can do the work. Our goal has always been (over several decades) to produce puppies that "make a difference" in their owners' lives. It does not matter whether they are schutzhund competitiors, show ring competitiors, Police K-9, SAR, Flyball, agility, CGC, therapy dog or just the great, well-temperamented companion for the family( and we have puppies in homes that are successful in all of these areas). We try very hard to support our puppy buyers in any way we can---no matter where they are and what their end goal is with their puppy. The key to our program is "making the difference". We are VERY proud when our customers put "titles" on their puppies/dogs. It makes us very proud as breeders. We realize, though, that finding good clubs, the time and the $$'s is sometimes hard to do. We encourage our owners to at least put some structured obedience and, hopefully, a CGC on their puppies. Sometimes, a small success, like a CGC will create desire to go on and do more with their dog/puppy- if they can find a club/organization in their area to help them go forward. I think a lot more people would "title" their dogs, but the training is not available. My husband and I train, title and show our dogs and we are both retired police K-9 handlers. We know the work and dedication that goes into raising, training and producing a puppy/dog that can "make a difference".
So, yes, yes, we LOVE for our puppies to go on and be "titled", but most of all we want our buyers to have successes with their puppies/dogs no matter what their choice is for their new companion. AND, as breeders, we applaud and are proud of each and every one of those successes, no matter what they are.

I would love to see titles of any kind put on the puppies I breed but most of all they should be loved, have hips & elbows xrayed and Breed Surveyed. That above all else tells me that I am heading in the right direction with my breeding.
Here there is no way my puppies could earn Schutzhund titles but CD, UD, HD, CH, BOB would be icing on the cake.

Jenni78 - I agree completely with you.
Of the whole 2 puppies that my dogs have produced (1 I kept), a title would be nice - but more important is that I want the puppies to be treated with kindness and respect and are loved. I want them to be trained in obedience and to be socialized and to be exercised often.

SitasMom, thought we'd never agree! What is this forum coming to? LOL
As an aside...........sable59, if you want to advertise your kennel in every single discussion post, why not just put a link in your signature line, like the other breeder/advertisers do?
I think a better answer (for the dogs' sake anyway) would be "yes, but not at all costs" than this resounding "YES!" everyone's proclaiming. I don't really think (at least I hope) anyone in this thread truly would rather have their dog treated as a tool for SchH over a beloved companion who participates and maybe even excels at SchH. Wanting them titled is understandable, but at the end of the day, I think we want them valued and happy, healthy, and loved.
