Totally unexcusable!! My heart goes out to the family.

As far as it not "probably not being just a shelter worker"(quoting Molly). Around here & most shelters I know of,  that is exactly who is in charge of putting the animals down. There isn't just one particular person or a vet that is in charge of it. It falls on the shoulders of whomever happens to be working on the day the animals are put down. So it wouldn't always be the same person. ALL employees are trained to perform this correctly & they are SUPPOSED to follow a specific set of rules before putting any animal down.
Regardless of how it happend, it's a shame such a great dog is no longer with her family!!!

No chip, no tags, making assumptions instead of phone calls = dead dog. If she'd had an ID tag, the neighbor who found her would have called the owner instead of the shelter.

"A neighbour found Target wandering later that day and put her in his backyard and called the shelter. The dog did not have a microchip or tag.

On Friday night, Sgt Young found Target's picture on a website used by Pinal County's dog catchers to help owners track lost pets. He thought the shelter was closed for the night and weekend.

He showed up at the shelter in Casa Grande to claim his dog on Monday, only to find out she was dead."

This stuff happens all the time. In Chicago, a police officer's GSD who was quarantined at the dog pound after a (justified) bite was mistakenly killed.

Any dog at a shelter is in mortal danger and needs to be gotten out immediately.

I heard about this sad story when it first came out but I just today found out that a co-worker of mine is the one that found Target.  Here is a story in a local paper expressing his feelings.  I know him personally, he is a wonderful man and is extremely distraught over this.
