Copy all of your e-mails to a safe place, copy the craigs list add if possible and then ignore him.

If he says he is going to charge you with theft, you will have evidence.

Go to the shelter and "apply' for a dog. AFTER you are approved, give the shelter the rest of the information. Then is shouldn't be much of an issue, should it?

If they don't approve you, then walk away without telling them anything more.

I would keep the dog, and chew the guy up for wanting the dog back.

Now that you've trained the dog yourself, he wants it back either to sell it or to have a trained dog.

That's not right.

But it's up to you.

1. Do an independent check of the rescue if you know which one it is on their policies w/out saying you have the dog.

2. If you have the dog in your possession, have it licensed in your name, and by any chance have any correspondence regarding the transaction - all in your favor.

If the shelter policy is the dog needs to go back to them or not - and you can get a copy of it - get it anyway.

If the shelter has no return policy, and you have the dog in your possession and licensed in your name, AKC registration means nothing unless the guy can prove that you stole the dog from him. (As he most likely did not file a police report prior to this, I doubt this will fly in any court.) However, the AKC cannot compel him to transfer registration, sad to say.

Good luck!

He's a kid who may have gotten temporarily overwhelmed with life and now misses his dog.  Why not meet with him and the pup and see what the dog wants?  There are lots of other very worthy dogs waiting and if he ends up with this one, it gives you the opportunity to save another.

Tell him to POUND SAND, end of story.

I think I see this from a different prospective......Like Keith said, maybe the guy's situation changed which will now allow him to have his dog back.....What if the shoe were on the other foot......What if it were you who had to give up the dog because of an unfortunate situation and than later you could get your dog back......Wouldn't you be so grateful to the person who had your dog if they would give it back to you.....So there is another side to consider......

Also, like Keith said, by giving the dog back, could possibly give you the opportunity to rescue another one...JMO
