No ant problems here but I use a variety of things when teaching tracking. Of course hot dogs but when I can get it Bill Jack frozen but I can only get it when I go away from here. I use sardines a lot., and when its dry I will take 2 cans and fill an old nylon hose with it and use it as a drag, works good on pups. I started buying liver at the slaughter house they will sell you a huge one fro $5 and slice it real thin load it up with garlic powder and then put it in oven at low heart until it gets hard . The just break it into pieces and dogs love it nice odor too hard for ants to want and not messy on the hands

I freeze my hot dogs and put them on the track frozen.  If it is really hot I will go to bigger pieces and less of them.  It's been a very hot summer where I am and I rarely have an issue with ants for about 20 to 30 minutes on the bait.  I bring the hot dogs out frozen and cut them frozen as I lay the track.

I am going to be focusing on hard surface tracking, parking lots, streets and shopping centers for the next few weeks and will be making some food just for that.  I may try the liver idea. sounds interesting.  Since I feed raw, kibble is out for me.  I am going to feed 1/2 the dogs meal on the track and see how it goes.

I haven't tried it, but supposedly sprinkling white pepper in your bait bag before laying the track will keep ants off it on the track.  Though you have to get the dog accustomed to the pepper first.
I have been using the natural balance, string cheese and articles. reward the dog on the track and the ants aren't a problem so far.  I feed raw, and was putting raw beef or pork on the track, ants loved it.

Hallo,

Natural Balance has done wonders! I cant use hotdogs because of vasps. Actually my dog got bitten as an young adult and when he saw a hottog he made a dtour around it and kept tracking without eating it.

Frozen in my case (summer time) is not really much help since I let my track sit at least an hour, usually 2-5 hours for the advanced dogs.

So Natural balance and later my dogs track for the articles so I use very little bait on tracks.

Happy tracking

Just as a comment...

Garlic is potentially toxic to dogs.  I don't think it'd be possible for an adult dog [large body mass] to reach toxic levels with garlic-laden tracking bait [low quantity of food actually on the track]; but with a very small puppy [low body mass] who is getting bait in every single footstep [high garlic intake]... you might want to shy away from the garlic just to play it safe.

I simply freeze cut up hot dogs in old time ice cube trays, one in each compartment, and put out frozen. Then track the dogs as the ice is melting and the smell of the hot dog is coming out. No ants that way.

I use Natural Balance rolls, too, but I love the goldfish cracker idea. My daughter's dog is a "people food" junkie!

I like BilJack and hot dogs too but my old dog used to track to find his ball hidden somewhere on the track!  Man!!!   He was so so so happy when he got to find his ball!  I always made a divit with my heal so that the ball was somewhat concealed.  I like the idea of freezing the hot dogs too....never thought about that!

Ya learn something new every day!
