Having had GSD`s and other dogs for many years we do not get Fleas on our Dogs!!!

How???

Start by Frontlining or Similar, and then give in Main Meal 2 (Two) Garlic Capsules (for a big Dog, One for a small dog), Animal Grade which can be got from your Animal Feed Store', We may every few years just reinforce Garlic with Frontline, just in case

Works for us, but your Vet will tell you different, but then they make no profit from this.

Also Garlic is suitable if your Dog has an open wound, to keep it clean and sterile, just melt 1 (one) capsule in a small amount of warm water and bathe the wound, mixture will keep for a few days.

Also rarely, or never, get Worms in our Dogs, but as a precaution yearly Worm anyway

Works for us

Garlic pills, one a day, Gel capsules..........haven't seen a flea in years.
For those that are heavily infested with mosquitoes and ticks/fleas, there is an all natural garlic spray which helps greatly.

A good friend tried it and it's making a huge difference.

I'm with moons on the whole feeding thing; it simply doesn't make sense that nutrition alone could repel fleas.  Minimize their negative affects, perhaps but prevent them?  If we were to believe all of the hype surrounding raw feeding (most of it anecdotal and it seems there is no shortage of experiences disproving the various claims), raw feeding is the panacea for all that is wrong with the world.  I'm surprised BP hasn't caught on to this secret and started dumping raw chicken into the gulf to stop the flow of oil.

Garlic is also not effective but it is poisonous:

Personally, I haven't had a flea problem since I started using Sentinel years ago.

Frontline Plus works for me...and I have to use it year-round. Squirrels & cats are everywhere around here, so the fleas are always ready to attack.

I buy doses off of Ebay in the form of a "kit" for the cheapest price around.

Mr Grossman

Looking at the article my 42Kg Dog would have to have approx. 7.5 ounces of Garlic to have
any ill effect, hardly relevant i think.

and yes it does work,

My Aunt, a GSD lover/owner, has always used garlic and swears by it.

Guys it is not the quality of food that repels fleas, it's certain things in foods.  The one user suggested garlic pills......I know people personally who use garlic pills, and they NEVER see fleas, ever, even in areas that you would think there dogs would be getting fleas from.  None of their dogs are on front line or any other preventative.  Though I've never used it, I know it works for them.

For the OP of this post.  I would start by giving a capstar pill, and another two weeks later, followed by frontline or advantix, or whatever you'd prefer to use.  Capstar kills the fleas on the dog for twenty four hours.

No, you're wrong. It's the overall health of the organism that counts, not what you feed it...unless what you feed it makes it healthier. Parasites do not attack healthy animals with much gusto. Also, a belly full of grain is the perfect location for worms. They are not fond of pure meat and do not thrive in a non-grain-fed dog.

It takes a lot of Garlic to have any kind of effect and I don't believe it's good for the dog.
I know people who swear by it, for themselves, they eat tons of it, and they stink!
You can smell it on them.
Does it really help, only time will tell if they fall dead from a heart attack, thats why they are taking it.

As for grain over meat, my dogs get worms from what they catch and eat, meat, rodents and small game.
Include raw meat you may be feeding, and fish.
Nothing from any grain I've ever fed.

It has nothing to do with the contents of a dogs stomach.    It does take longer to drag down a healthy animal than one in poorer heath for sure, but the parasite makes no distinction.

Fleas?
Try Red Cedar in bedding, and a little sevin dust.
Kill fleas, don't just repel them which is all frontline may or may not do.
A good kennel dip kills them on contact and stop eggs from hatching.
Then figure out where the fleas are coming from and eliminate the source, rodents, stray animals, your own cats, the area it's self where you live, old buildings that harbor fleas from other animals.

Don't trade one problem for another with a lot of chemicals at any rate.
