77 lb. male in a 700 crate with Lufthansa as Excess Baggage in May 2010: Euro 350 from Frankfurt to Dallas Fort Worth.
There may be less expensive Airlines but with American, you have the temperature problem in Summer and in Winter.
I think it is supposed to be a service for pet people and not for breeders and the Airlines/Animal Welfare (through IATA) are trying to stop the commercial import and export of animals. As was previous the case one could hire someone to fly a dog in and out and it was less expensive than shipping a dog via a professional pet freight service. This killed that industry.
The last bitch I transported to the USA, I had huge problems. Although a normal sized bitch and I had purchased a 500 crate they brought the airport veterinarian up and I had to purchase a 700 crate at the airport. Cost factor Euro 300, in addition to at that time the Euro 300 transport.
At Frankfurt airport, there is absolutely no assistance with baggage and dog crate. I have always found arrival at this airport to be the biggest problem. I don't know how a minor with dog and crate manages to get through Customs without the assistance of extra personnel. Extra personnel costs money.
The intent of offering transport for animals in the cargo hold of a plane is to ship pets from one end of the world to another when their owners are being relocated and not for breeding purposes. This service was abused by many commercial breeders and brokers of dogs. Now, it is all that suffer including the military folks that are going home with their pets. As long as it was affordable, they took their pets home with them rather than abandoning them at the shelter.
