Don't for get that dogs on a raw diet will also consume less water.  May not seem like much but in periods of extreme heat a well hydrated dog is a plus!!

None of my dogs have ever done well (in fact got sick) on Solid Gold. I stay far, far away from it.

There are many good quality dog foods oput there. Your decision should be based on your dog's activity level.  You don't want to feed 30% protein to a dog that sits in a shipping crate all day (not saying that is what you do, just an example) or 12% to a dog that runs the Iditarod.  Fat should be above 12% for a relatively active dog.  Hope that helps.

I feed both my dogs TOTW.  They are both doing really well on it but I've never had any problems with them on any other food.  I was feeding them Wellness Core but switched because of price.  I feed them the TOTW prairie.  Kibble & can plus I still buy Wellness Core canned.  The Salmon, beef, lamb& turkey. I also give them ground venison aprox 2x /week.  Both their coats look really good and they have no other issues.

Thank you for the information everyone that commented on either the Solid Gold or the TOTW. I looked at the Solid Gold and the fat content in most of their foods is really low.  I am dealing with some dry coats right now and dont want it to get worse.
I am leaning more towards the TOTW right now. I may give the Pacific Stream formula a try

I have talked to both companies. The Solid Gold manufacturer says they do have ethoxyquin in their food, but it's only 2 parts per million. It's put in the fish before it's cooked down is why 2 ppm and they say it's not dangerous. Ethoxquin is a carcinogen and not recommended for people. Taste of the Wild has no ethoxyquin. They use vitamin E for a preserative. That is why I prefer TOTW.

I emailed TOTW and this is what they said to me...

"Most of the ethoxyquin is destroyed in the cooking process, requiring other
preservatives to be used. Tests for ethoxyquin are run routinely on Taste of
the Wild. The results are typically less than 5ppm. This is equivalent to
0.0005% or 5 ten-thousandth’s of a percent. This is a true trace level that
many laboratories are unable to detect. The amount allowed, and considered
to be safe, by the FDA is 75ppm."

I also emailed Solid Gold about this and this is what was said...

"We do not add Ethoxyquin to our diets. Our manufacturing mill has informed us that they are unable to source Ethoxyquin-free fish meal and that all fish meal is required, by the US Coast Guard, to be preserved with Ethoxyquin. This said Ethoxyquin has a short life, when products containing Ethoxyquin are received at the manufacturing mill; they are tested to determine the amount of Ethoxyquin remaining in the product. In rare instances small amounts of Ethoxyquin may be reported in the “raw” ingredient but is oxidized (used up) during the cooking process. We also, through an independent lab, randomly test finished product for Ethoxyquin levels and other values such as nutrients, bacterias and toxins."

From what I was told there is no way for them to get Ethoxyquin free fish since that is what the Coast Guard requires and uses at the port before the fish is brought in.

Pharaoh

by Pharaoh on 13 June 2010 - 01:06

Pharaoh eats pimarily raw food.

About 4 - 5 times a week he gets TOTW Wetlands formula.  2 cups kibble with 1 cup water left to soak for a while.

The wetlands formula has no vegetable oils in it.  Pharaoh likes it.

Solid Gold - Barking At The Moon is Grain Free.   I have never used it (I use Orijen), but Leerburg sells it on his website.

Thanks for all the information. I will give the TOTW a try. I will probably try the Pacific Stream formula since the protein is a little lower than the other 2 formulas. The bad part is that I cant get the TOTW where I work..but oh well. I can get the Solid Gold, but I am concerned that the fat levels in the Solid Gold formulas(with the exception of the Barking at the Moon formula) is way to low.
