My boy is 1 year and he doesn't hike his leg. Though, if our female goes to do her business he will try and cover it up with his own. And he marks one particular spot when we're walking around the block, but not excessively like I see some dogs do.

My boy is 13 months, and cocked his leg for the first time this week. It was almost involuntary, the leg lifted, he looked at it like it was a foreign object, then proceeded to pee on his front feet! He needs to work on his aim ;)
This was outside his home environment, at a place where other dogs have marked. At home, he will "cover" where the other dogs (all girls) have peed, but not lift his leg.

I've never had a GSD mark in the house. I also agree with the rest, 6 months is young, give him time.

As well as been too immature to start marking his territory, after all that's what cocking the leg is, marking & not just peeing, the actual operation of standing on three legs is not as easy as it looks for a youngster.
GSDs have never had a particularly good aim which is why I chuckle when other people do that silly, "give us your paw, there's a good boy" stuff.
'Ol Nelson who is nearly 6 will still pee in a girlie squat but only if he's 'Miss Desperate' and in his own territory.

Galan was around or over 6 months too... He will be three in May, and he only lifted his leg ONE time in the house after Sch. training, a few months ago.. I don't know what he was thinking, but he won't do that again!
I watch him outside sometimes after he's been holding it all night and wish he had better aim. He always gets s litle the back of his front feet... I wouldn't shake his paw LOL

He'll learn, no need to be worried about it.
And I second Stacy's comment above...my boy's aim is HORRIBLE. I just tell people he's got brighter pigment on his front paws...

I heard that they cock their legs when they reach a year old. They also need a vertical object like a tree or a post to cock their legs against. A friend of mine said a dog in the desert will never cock his leg, he rather squats his hing legs. Do not also forget that they imitate each other.

When in the yard or able to run free Hero started doing it at about 11 months.
When I'm walking, I don't give him an opportunity to hike his leg.

Drake lifts his leg so high, he almost falls over half the time. He also has "brighter pigment" on his front paws, gross.
