I think he is a not so well bred, but 100% GSD. I also think he is a very lucky boy, and you are an absolute 100% sweetheart for giving him a spot by your fireplace to retire to.  He has the most gorgeous expression, and Im sure he adores you, and he knows what you have done for him. Enjoy him.

God bless you for taking this old gentleman in.

I hate people that throw away their old friends like that.  You know this old fellow would have walked for miles
on hot tar to stay with his person and such loyalty is rewarded with a trip to the pound.

He looks like a poorly bred GSD to me.  Certainly no wolf in him, IMO.

There was a man here in kansas you can google search him. He started a breeding program of what he called the American Tundra Shepherd. I have trained may of them for people who bought from him. Guy was in a wheele chair and passed away last year. The picture of the dog looks exactly like everything i saw from him and yes they were Shepherd, Akitas,Wolfs, Malimuts. with variations of the mixs to each one. They were always looking like very large over sized shepherds. He did sell his dogs to the public when they were soft and more loving than what he wanted for his program that was designed to produce working K9s for millitary. Looks like a happy guy sad someone would give him up.

thanx so much everybody for your congrats and opinions. i forgot to check this for awhile, been busy spending time with my doggies :-) i am really enjoying this boy. my friend said he was a good watch dog but i don't think so. just a big lovebug but his size is impressive. i heard a neighbor across the street yelling "that's a damn wolf" when he was out earlier to potty. he's a big mellow old boy. he has separation anxiety pretty bad. i was gone for awhile today doing some shopping and when i came home he started yelping and crying when i went into a room out of his sight. my boyfriend was home the whole time and said he did the same thing pretty much the whole time i was gone. he's laying by my chair as i type. i wish i knew more of his story. i suppose there's always the good ol' dna test i could order from a pet catalog. my, wouldn't that be interesting. he's not real huge, maybe about 26 inches at the shoulder but that's big to me at my height of 5 feet........it's that big head that makes me wonder. that's why my friend insists he has to be wolf. nenz had a big head too but nenz was a german import, showlines.  people kept insisiting he was wolf too from his big head. hawk's coloring suggests american lines to me so i just wonder where that big head came from......and that short tail. mega mystery. snout is shorter than nenz's was.

No Wolf no Akita....just shep with poor breeding.

I would say most definitely not wolf, from both body and head configuration.  A wolf shepherd cross would most like strengthen and shorten the ears a bit and enlarge the head.  I would also expect a slightly different body configuration than this fella presents.  My guess would be gsd and some sort of bulkier less angulated breed, perhaps a larger lab or lab mix or a pit mix might account for the larger wide head and the ears.  Looks like a sweetie...Good luck.
