Excellent post Mystere. She is right on in all respects. My only point to differ on is who starts ringing (tolling) the bell.....

A personal example: Years ago, when I was first starting in SchH, the club I was just joining trained at a high school on Sunday mornings. Near the field we were using was a gym that was being used by a church to hold services. One day, as the service was letting out, a man came out, watched us doing bite work for about one second and suddenly started screaming at the top of his lungs about how we were "teaching dogs to kill children". He screamed and screamed and screamed this out and was really out of control. I was surprised that no one in the group (I was new) went to the man to speak to him. I still consider that this was a missed opportunity.

However, I personally have also, since then, experienced people watching bite work who immediately misunderstood what was going on, (and obedience for that matter where a correction was given). I have always tried to take the pro-active approach and go speak to them and explain what it is all about. In most instances, I believe I was successful. However, I have also taken a lot of shit from those in the sport who view this bite work as life and death and would pound me into the ground for saying it was NOT about teaching dogs to bite, but rather rewarding a dog with a bite for learned discipline and control. They want the dogs to come off tough, and the harder and faster the dog goes after the helper, the better.  I see it over and over here where people laud those hard ass dogs who theoretically will come after anyone who enters a yard without permission. So many here thrive on telling others how their dog would protect them and though many are full of it and don't know what most dogs would do in such a case (barking doesn't count except as a deterrent), the "badder" they can make their dog, the better. I see it very differently, for a lot of reasons, and one of the reasons is exactly this issue. If we do not FINALLY begin to police ourselves, believe me, others will do it for us, whether we like it or not.

I would be willing to bet that in Vienna, Austria in the recent past, there was some specific incident that triggered this lamentable response from the person bringing the proposed ban. I have a client who is there now and will ask her. Piling on, with respect to the morons among us is indeed necessary, however much detestable.

Bob, the right question to ask is whether you would offend PETA? How much "fur" do you have on your person (no, don't reveal that - LOL). As for the hat, is it some cheap imitation or the real deal?

Would my hat offend PETA?

Yep.  They would throw red paint on you and want you euthanized for the well being of all the planet's animals.
At the very least they would demand immediate neutering.

I will not give up my furs!

Nia, an excellent explanation of what the issue is, and will continue to be.  Even within the dog world (animal world) PETA is already achieving the divide and conquer battles.  In every segment that has anything to do with any animal use.  Yes, having a pet is an animal use.

This has nothing to do with PETA or anything else. Go away from the american way of thinking, things in Europe are different. This is about a "regular" person owning a weapon. And the Burgermeister of Wien considers, that trained protection dogs are resembling weapons that should not be owned by privat persons. It has nothing to do with breed legislatiion or bite statistics. The SVO is on it and should be able to push the right buttons. Most likely this law will not be able to pass as SCHH is a worldwide recognized sport; and which Burgermeister wants her city to be unfamous for banning such sport.

Of course you are correct Elkoorr. Wohnen Sie in Österreich?

Okay so I hate to follow such a Vulgar and Idiotic post as the one above, so to get back on track. This is what my friend Al Govednik sent me. As you know he is in close communication with Frans Jensen head of the FCI working commission.

Hi guys,

As most of you have heard, there is a movement to ban our sport in Austria. To make a long story short, I asked to see if there was anything that we could do from here in America.

The below link was what I was asked to pass along to all of our people. Please take the time to respond.

Al Govednik

Hi Al,

There is an internetl adress where one can give his opinion against the prohobition of Schutzhund.

www.reinelt.at

I hope a lot of people will take action

Take care Frans
