Lief, as usual I have no idea what you're talking about. WHAT DO YOU MEAN???

by eichenluft on 07 March 2010 - 15:03

I think that is terrible.  It's one thing for a TRAINER to use electric for TRAINING - it's quite another to sell a product to the general uneducated masses of dog owners.  I think it's absolutely terrible.  Poor little fu-fu dogs whose owners buy one.

It's almost humorous, considering most of the local PetStoopids around here have a fit if you bring a dog in on a prong collar, and I knwo of one that won't let you bring your dog in at ALL if they are wearing one.

I can't wait until people who've tried this garbage start calling. Stay is the easiest command to teach, anyway.

Oh, Lief- nothing wrong with a stay table, they do wonders for lots of dogs- but I bet yours doesn't zap him.

The owners who buy this are the same people with e-fences, who use an e-collar in the house to punish dogs for bad manners and then they will wonder why their dog is a neurotic mess.

I hope someone at PetSmart gets the message and removes this product from the inventory. It is just another way for some company to make money. And yes, many poor dogs who know nothing because they are owned my people who know nothing and have done nothing with the dog, will suffer needlessly because of human stupidity.

Have you read the reviews?  There is not a single positive statement written about this thing, which gives me hope that they'll pull the product.
I really like the "teach your dog to sit after an agility competition."  What?!?!  If you can train your dog to compete in agility, you should be able to train a sit-stay without a shock mat.

People,

If you go to that website and post a review or comments, PLEASE BE SURE TO CHANGE THE STAR RATING. Some of you have posted there and not changed it, and although your comments are justifiably negative, your STAR rating gives an EXCELLENT rating to the product. READ CAREFULLY or you just shoot yourself in the foot. This link should be forwarded and ALL dog trainers with any sense should be making comments here as well as contacting any store that sells it. Here is something we can agree on. Here is something that people who care about proper training should be easily able to say this is an inappropriate method of training a dog.

No way would I buy one...Teaching a dog to stay is not hard...Even the time it takes to teach stay under distractions isn't that much...The shock of moving would freak a dog out, anyway, and likely make him bolt off it.

Then you might have a heck of time ever getting him back on it again.

No way, never.  Bad idea...bad, bad, bad.

Sunsilver

I came very close to buying a shock mat for my cat, but that was to keep him from peeing in my closet, not forcing him to stay in one position!

Bad, bad idea!

I didn't see the mats at my store for that particular pad, though they did have the one Sunsilver mentioned for deterring dogs/cats from going to certain spots.

I know what you mean KC about the people working there frowning on prong collars, and yet they sell them all day long, and I'll add that most, if not all of the employees in the store don't even know how to properly fit dogs for them, or know how to effectively use one so they can educate the owners before they buy the product. I have been saying for years that pet supply stores should have people who actually know  something about dogs.

They don't say shit to me though when I am there with my male and he has a prong on LOL
