I have found some plain canned pumpkin or unflavored yogurt works wonders for poor stool.

It's just a band aid. The dog needs LOW fiber right now, which pumpkin is definitely NOT.

Okay, I'm back.
The outershell (Iknow stinks) shell of the poop was dark brown.  When I went to was it away (10 min. of coming out) was brown, but when water hit it was blood red.
I have now fed her 1 standard meal (+2cups milk) and 2 small meals.  Oddly enough, Cookie is still happy and accepting of food and affection.  She doles out the affection to boot.  I have a meal planned for am feeds at 6:00 chicken breast with broccoli and carrots all raw all ground.  Will see after we get to vet what I can do next.

THANK YOU ALL!  I don't think I could have slept tonight until I figured this out.

Forget the veggies. Grind the chicken, bone and all. That is all she needs.

What is the puppys stool like? I agree with vomM that no veggies!! blah blah blah food.Don't even know that I would bother with the bone as that might be a bit hard to digest right now. I hope that you are able to get her to the vet and hope she is ok. Are her gums pink? If they are when you push on them does the pink color come back quickly or does it take more then 3 seconds? Is she drinking alot?
Best of luck to you.Keep us updated

Okay, last check on her.   She was dehydrated when I got he here, but she has had good fresh water and is doing good.  I didn't feed her more than the three meals.  I plan on a 6:00 feeds (no veggies), then off to vet at 9.  Puppy hasn't pooped yet, that I can see, but I suspect from her behavior thus far, that she is cleaning it up before I can see it.
Thanks for all of the help.

The BONE is what makes the meat move more slowly and is what plugs up the diarrhea.

PS. The puppy would probably not have bloody poops yet. Usually hits at about 6 months.

By the way......be prepared for the vet to tell you NO RAW. Phooey.

Pumpkin is water soluble fibre. It's like metamucil. It helps keep the stool together because it's like jelly. I'm a nurse. We specialize in poop, both cleaning it up and keeping it moving through the body. It won't hurt, and it's the first thing some people will recommend for diarrhea.

Now, if this dog has colitis, the LAST, the absolutely LAST thing it needs is sharp bits of bone irritating an already bleeding intestinal mucosa! If you give bone, grind it up really finely.  For now, I'd suggest just giving meat and not bone. I don't have the faith in raw diets that some people have. That's because I worked a lot with bones in the lab when I was in university. Chicken bones (and all bird bones) are thin walled and hollow inside. The broken edges are very sharp, and yes, I HAVE heard of several cases where dogs died from a punctured bowel after eating raw chicken complete with bones. We nearly lost one of our cats from a bird bone, too.

Colitis is usually treated with steroids. They will make the dog thirsty and increase its appetite. It will pee more than usual, needless to say.

But first, the vet needs to rule out parasites and parvovirus, two other possible causes of bleeding. Save a stool sample to take with you in the morning.

Any dog or other animal that's been starved needs FREQUENT, SMALL MEALS.  I saw the vet rehabilitate a couple of starvation cases when I worked for him, and that was how it was done.

One thing I'm quite sure of is, in additon to saying 'no' to a raw diet, the vet will try to sell you a bag of Science Diet. Read the label on that crap, and you'll see you're paying top dollar for something that's mostly corn meal. The Dog Food Analysis site rates all Hills products at one star, and that only because it's not possible to give them anything lower.

Good luck with her! I think she looks more like a pit bull.

So the consensus is small frequent meals....how's the dog today, Windy?

That dog is not a Pit. Pit with Boxer, probably. Jaw structure is ALL WRONG for a Pit, and so is the angle from eyes to muzzle. Poorly bred Boxer mix or Pit/Boxer mix.

Windy, I meant to say last night (but the health stuff was more important) that the pup is not, IMO, near 6 weeks. Probably also smaller due to poor nutrition. What do his/her eyes look like? Dark and clear, well-focused, or are they still hazy and bluish?
