Gotta say it: this whole frozen semen thing is discouraging. Lots of paperwork, expense and hassle. LOW success rate. No wonder people don't just stockpile collections from dogs they like in order to have it when/if the "right" bitch comes into their hands years later. Or, just to "have" access to bloodlines they like for future use. :-)
Thank you for your insight. I truly appreciate the information.

well, I do stockpile. I started collecting Eagle when he was 8 years old and very viable for natural breeding. I'm glad I did, and I feel it's worth the money for storage and collection, to have the option to continue breeding to a stud dog that is very special, for years to come. So yes the semen is very valuable. It's just iffy - but when you get the litter you hope and pray for, from a stud dog who is no longer breeding - it's a special litter, and worth all of the hassle and expense IMO.

I have my male collected and stored. He is only 4.5 but I wanted to collect him when he was young. Luckily he is an easy collector and has averaged 20 straws per collection. However, due to the expense I only have kept a small portion of that.
I have about 16 straws kept for myself and sold another 4 to someone in Sweden. They used one straw last year and got a singleton puppy and did another breeding this December and the ultrasound just showed a small litter albeit more than one pup so the litters (at least in my experience) are one the smaller side.
