Fascinating suggestions Wildmoor -- I wasn't familiar with the Chodsky Pes ("Bohemian shepherd" according to wikipedia) until you mentioned it.  Now I want one!  :D  (I wonder how they compare to the Altdeutscher Shäferhund since they could be considered to be the same "landrace" that was eventually turned into the GSD.)  I also didn't realize that the Altdeutscher Hütehund had that many recognized regional varieties.  I've only met the Schafpudel variety, and while they were nice dogs they didn't appeal to me for looks.  The ones you mention certainly do!

Hi Jackal
Here is the link for the Klub of the Chodský pes known in Germany as the Chodenlander Hund, in the UK Chodsky Dog
www.kpchp.org/indexen.php  there is also a searchable database. There is one being imported into the US this year from the kennel Bohmerwald www.hundezucht-vom-boehmerwald.de/index.htm not sure which country you are from, I am based in the UK, they are now in most European countries.

They are appprox 10cm smaller and about 10 kg lighter than the GSD, they are not sharp in temperment as the Altdeutscher Shäferhund.

For more info on the Altdeutscher Hütehund this is a good site www.altdeutschehuetehunde.de/index.php

I'm in love with the Boxer, they are such goof balls and funny dogs.
The boxer is the second on my list after a GSD.

I too am a big dog girl and if I ever would get a small dog, I'd get an English Cocker Spaniel.
They are hardy, happy and can work.

Anything smaller than that no thanks ;)

Aaaannnnd I'm working now with a Dobermann breeder and she has some nice looking dogs, I like their looks and they seem pretty cool and right up my ally.

But I think I'll even out all the goofyness the Boxer will bring to my life with a serious GSD

Great photos and thank you for the links Wildmoor!   I'm going to spend some time researching these breeds -- I'm already quite interested in the Tiger, for example.  I haven't had time to sit and read the links, but from appearances alone I'd wonder if the breed didn't contribute to the English shepherd (which isn't English) or the Australian shepherd (which isn't Australian).  And I really like the appearance and what I've read of the temperament of the Chodský pes very much.  I'm in Canada and so far as I know the breed hasn't been imported here, but that doesn't mean I can't dream!

Beautiful photos Escobar.  I'm very fond of boxers myself -- they have tremendous personalities.  But if you do get one please be very careful about researching the bloodlines since they're even more prone to various ailments than GSDs.  Many here have bad hearts, for example, so that the dogs die at 6-7 years of age.  Dobermans certainly have brains and personality to spare as well, but if you like GSDs you might find that they're too sensitive.  Still, they provide an interesting contrast to the GSD.

The diversity in people's responses is interesting -- yet at the same time no one has said Shih Tzu, or Maltese.  I'm *shocked*!

Jackal73.

I work at a vet's office as a "help" if you will, or I work at the front desk and then I help in the back and although working there has opened my eyes to many things like the fact that american cockers and cavaliers are the most unhealthy dogs you'll get (along with the GSD unfortunaly) and I would never get the two breeds first mentoined.

And I've seen so many sick breeds, the worst breeds being Pug, Bulldog and the winner of them all Shar Pai, I would never ever ever get a dog from those breeds.

That being said my co-workers do not understand my facination with the Boxer saying that the breed is called a Vet's best friend.

They do have some illnesses but just as in the GSD I will settle with nothing less then an honest breeder and healthy dogs, showing means nothing to me if the dog can't live a good life.

Bu thanks for the comment - I love it when people are aware of health issues and pass that on.

Because we are simply killing some breeds with over breeding and poor breeding...

......And exhale

A friend lost her boxer to bone cancer. Apparently, it's fairly common in the breed.

ITA about the overbreeding. A lot of breeds are being ruined by it.

God damnit !

Is overbreeding one word ? I'm always trying to improve my grammar

I wrote it first but then I put poor breeding in the sentence and didn't feel like poorbreeding is correct .

Aaaaaannnyyyywwwwaaaayyyyssss On topic again.

Like I said, I realise the health problems Boxer seem to face but I would never the less like to home one, might get a happy rescue puppy who knows.....

I'm way too lazy to run around in the show ring for fancy ribbons. It's all work and all fun at the Escobar household
