I don't think the value of pre-nups can be under-rated.  Sadly, most marriages end in divorce these days.  Best to have it clearly stated where all dogs go.  If you don't have.....be prepared to swap assets for your dogs.  Best of luck to all those going through this.

The court-appointed arbitrator who heard our support hearing laughed out loud when opposition tried to claim the dogs are worth a lot of money. Apparently he used to be involved in breeding and showing dogs. There were a couple of lo-o-n-n-g faces across the table from me after that.
Unfortunately, I am still ordered to pay my ex-to-be monthly alimony.

Beautiful black dog Pharoah. I'm betting she's worth a lot more than $5K to you!

I would expect state laws would vary greatly in how they interpret the value of the family dog.  Unfortunately companion animals are typically considered "property" by the courts, and as such are susceptible to bargaining.

It would be wise to familiarize yourself with the law in your own community so that you understand your rights.  Divorce can get very ugly and it is sadly too common for one spouse to try to take the other's dog just to be spiteful or to gain some other financial advantage through concession of other "property".

If you can work it out with your spouse without greedy lawyers involved, all the better!  When my ex and I split we used an arbitrator and kept the disucssions civil and so it was relatively cheap and painless.  He got to keep his dog and I didn't have one of my own at the time.  I never dreamed of taking his dog.  Shame on the bastards that turn beloved pets into bargaining chips.
