$1200 for a puppy out of untitled parents with no "official" hip ratings?  hee hee

For that price you can get yourself a puppy out of proven producers of TITLED dogs BOTH with finalized hip ratings.

Man I just cannot get over the crazy prices people are charging - and apprarently getting - for dogs without titles or hip ratings or any of the things that top tier breeders provide.

No wonder so many folks want to jump into breeding.  Where are all these people coming from that want to throw this kind of money around?  And why aren't they shopping at my bicycle shop instead?  LOL

Bicycle for sale... bent rims, worn brake pads, dented frame, but with a cute fuzzy wuzzy seat cover... $1200!

I've seen prices from $800 to $1,500 + shipping also.

I would also make sure that the puppies parents had certified hips at minimum, try to find out if siblings have good hips and see pedigree to see that the ansesters have good hips, also if any adult puppies have been certified. Elbow information isn't always as easy go come by and is also important.

There are VERY few GSD's who ancesters are all perfect for 4 or 5 generations, but hte more the better!

fair, good, excellent
there are others........

I would also verify this information if possible.......don't just take a person's word. Ask to see the documents that show this information.

If you are wanting a working dog. Its best that the ancesters have show ability in the area in which you want to work and you want to tell the breeder exactly what you want to do with your dog and your expereince and let the breeder suggest the best puppies in the litter for that purpuse.

Energy levels, dominance, drives, etc. very in each puppy in a litter. A good breeder will have a an idea of the personalities of each puppy and can help you to match the puppy with your desire.

Make sure you look for complaints on this board, rip-off reports on the internet, at the BBB, and anywhere else.....If you find a complaint, check to see if the breeder has done everything they could do to fix the situation.

If you find a "deal" that seems too good to be true - is must might be.....be careful and don't settle for less then you want

Happy shopping.

Yvette, Yvette, Yvette,

You don't get it.   You are not using good "con-man business sense."  You must tell them that the bikes are "rare"or otherwise something that not just any old body can have.   Jack up the price! Apparently, lots of people like to believe that it can't be worth anything, unless they are being grossly over-charged for it.   Hence, the $2500-3500 puppies.

Leathank9,

Now that we have all told you to RUN from that breeder,  please allow me to offer some direction/ethical suggestions (websites are the same as kennel-name, unless otherwise indicated):

von Lindesfarne Kennels (Mark and Michele Scarberry) Ohio   Long-time schutzhunders, ONLY breed titled/surveyed dogs. Highly ethical and trustworthy.

von Grunheide (Suzanne Eviston) Washington State   Ditto, plus a K9 cop.

von Mathias (Terry Macias) California  Ditto (except not a k9 cop )

vom Diamante Grenze (Pat and Lisa Mattarese) Ohio  "    "

von Tarjetos (k9imports.com) (sp) Sue DiCero and Gabor Silaszi)  Tennessee

von Eisen___ (dogsportgear.com)  (Ralph Gilby) Canada

These are the breeders I have either personally dealt with, or know people who havve dealt with them.

I am sure that others will add to the list.   We will give you enough names to keep you busy long enough for the breeder in question to get  OFA hip certifications on the litter, much less the parents!

Also be sure to check the "Buyer Beware " thread from some months ago (Use the search function on this site)  We made a LONG list of things to check, ask about, red flags, etc.

Okay, I went to the "Search" function, and GOOD LORD, you would never have found it!!  For whatever reason, it never occurred to me that there would be so many pages coming up in that search, OR that so many breeds would be involved.  Sometimes, we forget this site includes more than gsds.

Anyway, here is the link to the thread I referenced:

there you go - $800 to $2000 for good working class puppies  + shipping of course

I would guess that the $800 puppy it might be a great pet, might not make it as a top quality working dog..........

I would wait until one week after the puppy's second vaccination to pick it up or have it shipped. And of course ask for the documentation.... Just to be extra cautious.
