If this dog weighs less than 70 lbs. I will be very surprised.

Let us know what happens.  I have flown my  male who weighs in at 80 to 85 lbs in a 500 crate as excess baggage with Delta, United & Frontier, and have not been charged excess for the dog & crate exceeding  the 100lb limit, which obviously they weighed more than that.... sometimes better lucky than good, eh?

You might be able to save some weight on the absorbant material by using shredded paper. The airlines have loved it, when I have shipped with th crate filled with shredded paper. I used to get garbage bags filled with shredded paper from a senator's office. (I just cannot generate enough shredded paper at home, even at this time of year filled with junk mail and catalogs).
