So how many people in this thread got a dog for Christmas, or are planning on getting one just for a few days?

Do you really think it's ok to get a dog for Christmas (or any other time) on an impulse? Is that how you got your dogs, because your hearts were bleeding?

Shouldn't the acquisition of a dog, whether by purchase, adoption, or to foster, be a well thought out venture so that it harms neither the family nor the dog?

Wouldn't it be kinder to the dogs if they stayed in the environment they're used to (yes, even though it's a shelter) and people (you?) gave their time to the shelter to walk them and feed them and clean the kennels during the holidays so that the shelter workers can have some time to do Christmas shopping and decorating and whatever.

Or do you truly believe it's best for the dogs to be moved to a new place which is crazy noisy messy busy with tons of new people in and out the door for just a few days and then go back to its crate at the shelter? Really, you do believe that?

Hm.

The dog in the story didnt go back , the  Father gave in to his insecurity with his past grief and allowed the boy to bring the dog home. BUt the dog   got out of the shelter , dug himself out and showed up on the lawn in the snow and Ice.

Yes, I believe in mankinds kindness give to any human or animal , and the jest of it is....not everyones house is chaos at christmas...Dogs are blessings not nuisances..

AND YES,   a dog knows love and bonding,,but a dog is usually kept by these people...NOT  a whim....people who do not love animals , are in most cases , not gonna bother to take the time to go get a dog..bring it home..Sure you can volunteer to give your time , but what pound will alow it...and bring home disease to your house by beint at the pound...These dogs are checked to go home with you and you can take your own percautions before taking the dog on your premises...

But to daily be in a pound not sure what is being sent in or out , is not where I want to be..Our pound will not allow people to volunteer.

YOu pay to take dog home or adopt. and the Fee is hefty in our area..  That is not the  Theme of the story anyway..

The programs are to   ENCOURAGE   adopting a lonesome pet from the Pound or the rescue...

The "Adopt-A-Dog-For-Christmas" program encourages people to pull a dog from a pound for a short time to give current fosters and shelter personnel a respite. That's how it is described on the Petfinder site, go look it up.

Do you really think that's a Good Thing?
