Actually the rules state you must use a fur-saver type collar.

MVF is right.. The fur savers don't actually save the fur, it ruins the fur... well for my dog that is.

This is what my dogs (Zambi) neck fur looks like now after using the fursaver.

I occassionally use the fursaver on her simply because it's so much easier to hook a lead onto her collar then their is on other collars out there.

If you're going to buy the fursaver to save your dogs fur, don't fool yourself because it may do the complete opposite. Only use the fursaver if you and your dog is going somewhere, don't let it be your permanent collar to be worn.

a fur saver is no different than a choke...just larger links! I'm not sure if you can trial in any collar but a fur saver...I could be wrong!

Also, I never use my fur saver except for training, trialing and walking in strange places.  I never leave it on my dog when she's unattended or even lose in the yard.

It won't break if she gets caught and it does have a live 'choke' ring that could get snagged and choke her, so she has a regular flat collar she wears 24/7.

I have used fur savers for 20 years but I use the more expensive ones that are  made in Germany and are very heavy.., sold at the Venors at show or trials or ordered from Elite K9.

I do not leave a collar on dog in any pen or cage or kennel
remove and hang on outside hook nearby.

They do save the fur and are very much that answer to no ring around the NECK...

I start all pups or dogs I am walking off my property with a choke collar or fur saver for safety and ability to control the animal safely..Used  PROPERLY they are safe for any size gsd, and do not slip off during activity or walking. I usually have a double collar on the adult dogs of a leather colored collar that is easily used if choke collar is not needed...all collars are taken off if dog is in kennels for transporting.

..Used PROPERLY......

That is the point, the collar himself will not damage the fur !  it is only if a leash is attached to it and used inproperly - tightning and keeping it tight cause the damage

In a USA schutzhund trial a dog must wear a loose chain collar, when  leash is attached, it must be to the dead ring.  No leather, nylon, pinch or e-collars allowed.

MOST PEOPLE JUST SWITCH OVER TO THE FURSAVER BUT TRAIN WITH A PRONG.  YOU HAVE TO WEAR IT FOR TRIAL BUT IT DOES NOT BREAK THE HAIR AS MUCH BIGGER LINK
