I think he will be very handsome and big.

Yes, I think he will definitely be big! I will try to post another photo in a month or so when his coat is completely changed.

He is beautiful! I love his color...please keep us udated as he grows up!!! I too think very dark black sable. To me the coloring around his neck gives it away...Awesome Pup!!

If he was sable, wouldn't the individual hairs on his back have lighter bases and black tips? They are not like this but uniformly black. The undercoat is virtually black too, except in the lighter areas. Its interesting though that when he was first born the breeder told me he was black-sable, but then later told me he was black. Except for small dark brownish patches behind his ears he definitely looked all black when he first came at about 2 months old, but as he grew the lighter markings became much more obvious.

Is it even genetically possible for him to be black? Doesn't look like the father has a black recessive and I don't see it in the pedigree. Were any other puppies in the little black? Were any puppies black and tan? If any of the puppies in the litter are black and tan, then it's not possible for this puppy to be a solid black, genetically.

Genetically, the sire, as a sable, can have 1 gene for sable and 1 for something else--in his case, black and tan or black are the options (maybe white or bicolor, but those are pretty unlikely and don't seem to apply here, so we can ignore those possibilities).

If the pup is sable, then the gene it got from dad is the sable gene. If the pup is black, it would have had to have gotten the black gene from dad and a black gene from mom. Therefore, dad would be Sable/Black--and there would be no black and tan pups in the litter.

So, dad's genetic pattern options are Sable/black or Sable/bt. Mom is black, so she is black/black. So, the pups colors will be some mix of those 4 options--either

Color options for the puppies are:

  (dad has black recessive)
1) Sable w black recessive and Black/black--making a black dog

OR

(dad has black/tan recessive--mostly likely chance based on pedigree and phenotype [he's a saddle-patterned sable without black toemarks and heels])
2) Sable with black recessive and Black/tan with black recessive

Option 2 could theoretically produce a black sable.

Interesting coloration on a very handsome puppy. It will be fun to watch how he develops.

I think he is an extremely dark black sable.

I have problem to match this pup with pedigree listed above. There are no solid black or sable or bi-color dogs there. Also none of the dogs have black on top of the toes. Only dog which I can see there which remotely could be responsible for markings like that is VA2 Timo vom Berrekasten. It is just about impossible for pup to have such color with this pedigree.

What about the dam's pedigree?  Could it come from there?

Prager

Puppy most probably sable...but lift tail, if there is any brown under tail above rectum then puppy is NOT black and shedding off color undercoat it is definately a sable dog. In any case this is a beautiful dog.
