"Breeds most notably affected with JRD include Shih tzus, Lhasa apsos, and Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers and Miniature schnauzers. Other breeds reported in the scientific literature cited above include Golden retriever, Tibetan spaniel, Flat coated retriever, King Charles Cavalier spaniel, Standard Poodle, Cairn terrier, Tibetan terrier, Bull Mastiff, Boxers, Finnish Harriers, Rhodesian ridgeback, Flat coated retriever, Norwegian Elkhound, Bedlington Terriers, Chow Chows, Shetland sheepdogs Rottweilers, Alaskan Malamutes, Yorkshire terriers, Airedale Terriers, Irish Wolfhounds, Keeshonds, Old English sheepdogs, and Collies. There are probably others not yet reported in the veterinary literature as this disease has such a varied phenotype that it is most likely to be reported in breeds with a high frequency of these mutations."

Very interesting research......and yet another thing for breeders to be careful of.......

Thanks Videx

You mean this is the first you have read anything about JRD?  You don't do the test for JRD in your breeding stock?  Just like the Americans don't test males for haemo, of course that's just a British thing like this JRD isn't it?  Seems to me there's not many breeds that are not affected, shit the dog world is doomed, lmfao.

Bazza,

Please post your links to the research that you have done that proves that JRD isn't a condition endangering the breed, that prove that Videx is, indeed a "mad' man, as you have called him above.

Without actual cases of JRD being reported and recorded it is virtually impossible to say either way, there are very few reported cases hear, how about America ANY? Why don't you ask the madman why he has such a vested interest, since he was the one who brought us the " breaking news" in the first place? Other than a few isolated cases there is very little evidence it is as prolific as he would have us believe. Of course my sources tell me he only announced this after he sold on one male proven to be a carrier, and another not tested but implicated which conveniently had his affix dropped from the name. Of course this selfless  madman is only doing this for the breed, give me a break, he doesn't do anything unless there is something in it for him. You will of course be having your dogs tested if not already done????  If no one can contribute their personal experiences with JRD, as i said, i will take it that it is not such a major problem as was once claimed.  Crys, if you or anyone knows of or has a dog affected please do tell, as they seem to be like hens teeth,............... NON EXISTANT!!!!!!! I rest my case!!

I'm not a breeder of GSD, or anything else, for that matter, Bazza.  I do know of an Alaskan Malamute bitch that lost six puppies out of a litter of nine, and from what I read, JRD is something I would test her for, if she were mine.

If Videx is right about this condition, seems to me that it may something that is becoming a known issue that more people need to test for, but perhaps don't yet.  There are many conditions destroying our beautiful breed that are being perpetuated by people who breed for the money, and until the breeding becomes about the dogs, these conditions will become more and more prevalent.

There are a good many breeders who breed for the benefit of the breed, striving to improve it, rather than destroy it.  But there are just as many or more breeders who don't really care.  Hip Dysplasia is a real issue, and it's tested for by many breeders.  Does that stop it from popping up?  No.  It doesn't.

The lack of reported cases of a condition doesn't mean there is no threat posed by it.  And if there are many things that can be contributed to JRD, but it was never tested for because no one had heard of it yet, then that doesn't mean that it never existed, but that it was never diagnosed.  There could be many, many people who have dealt with it without ever knowing they did.

I don't have a case, so I won't rest it, but I just wonder how much of it is out there, undiagnosed and unknown.
