I still disagree.
Depends on who's telling the story, I could agree if you said drug dealer however.
Gangster yes but mostly drug related status symbol and the myth of protection.
Not saying Black or White or Hispanic...... its not race relative.
Maybe you've read somethings but its the dogs image thats a liability here.
The question is who's creating this image, the dogs or man...... I say both.
P.S.
Correction, not both.....its all man made. Can't blame the dog or the breed.

Most everyone around here that has Pits is black or a red neck.....no offense to anyone that is either, I'm not racist so I have nothing against either....we're in the south..... They all use them as ego or status symbols, for fighting, or the purpose of just breeding litter after litter for big profits. Most have massive chains put on their necks, and they brag about how tough their dogs are. One recently approached my pack on a walk one day, charging at us, I gave it a correction that it never will forget. Every time it sees my dogs and I now it goes and sits down beside their house. I kind of agree with Two moons on this one, though being in the south I could see it being "racist", but I doubt it. I love that breed, but there are too many bad owners out there.

Whether or not we (gsd folks) are next or not, I do not know, but if it is happening to one breed in the freedom of the United States, then it can happen any where and any time. All it takes is for someone with a little political clout to raise a stink and
and go through the empty headed politicians that see this as a means of gaining votes and walla, we have trouble.
Two things are needed to make this crap continue sucessfully. 1. ignore it cause it does not effect MEEEEE. 2. continue to vote in people in office that have not a clue about dogs and only care about kissing babies and looking for votes.
What was common sense a few years ago, things that were taken for granted as our rights as US citizens are now being trampled on by the do gooders of the country. To name a few, Humane Society United States, Peta, and the many other folks that are about as ignorant about dogs and how to deal with them as you can get. Can any one help me spell Victoria Stillwell. The great trainer on TV during prime time. (NOT) How many folks take her training methods and what she says as the gospil. Lots.
If all the folks in Schutzhund, all sport training, akc, private trainers were to come together this thing could could iliminate the "freedom snatching leaches" that only care about control. This sadly will not happen because people never get involved until it hits their own lives. Than it is too late. Does anyone think that this town thought it would happen to them a few years ago.
I am not a pit bull fan. I appreciate them for their power, drive and gameness, but I do not particularly want one. Not because they are bad dogs, but just not my thing. But this idea of destroying them because they are a pitbull is insane. This smells like PETA in the lurches.

If these cities would spend half the effort on dangerous humans they would all be better places to live.
Imagine a truck load of criminals on their way to the processing plant, ingredient #7 in your dogfood.
City folk, they can have them and keep them (cities). I don't mind a visit but I would not want to live there.
Any laws that go after the animal instead of the human responsible are idiotic.
Same for gun laws.
Don't even get me started on politicians...LOL
Talk about a need for laws!

Pit bulls are required to wear muzzles at all times here, and not allowed to be bred, so I guess that is a ban in the making. We have lots of pits owned by rough looking crowds, but not one person is black as we don't have many in our community. So colour has absolutely nothing to do with the ban here. Am I worried about my shepherd being next? No.

Red Sable,
"Am I worried about my shepherd being next? No. Well, they may not be next, may be Rotts, may be chows, may be bandogs, may be who knows. May be put all high risk dogs in one basket and ban breeding on all with one stroke of the pen. For PETA that would be heaven. Too many politicians that are brain dead, too many animal rights groups, way to much subliminal advertising on TV that asks for money to "help" poor starving dogs", when in fact the money goes to organizations like the Humane Society US that control politicians. We, those of us that have working dogs are all at high risk for an epidemic of legislation across the globe that will dismantle our rights to have, own or breed working dogs. Same principle as gun control.
Talking about Terrorists, they are here amongst us in the form of the do gooder animal rights groups, only they look like our best friend and pose to be dogs best friend. These are the folks that believe a dog should sleep on the couch and eat at the table with you, but worse, they want to force their beliefs on everyone elses, I know, I live by them. They are the ones that call any reasonable corrections or training abusive. I need to stop here, I want to enjoy the rest of my day and if there is a group of people that make me sick to my stomach it is those folks that come as angels of light, but control is their goal.
So Red Sable, I would not get comfortable. You don't see the runaway train that is around the corner.

More laws aren't the answer...They never were and they never will be.
As for the groups owning Pitts...There aren't very many blacks here in the town I live in, but our local shelter has more than fifty percent of the population of Pitts and Pitt mixes, despite the absence of blacks in this area. The Spokane shelters are similar, and they do have the racial component, as well as some drug dealing and all that. I don't believe it's a race thing with the breed, as it seems to be quite uniformly spread across the country, regardless of the demographics involved. I think that Pitts have unfortunately become popular, perhaps in some part owing to Michael Vick and his fiasco, but the simple thing is that too many people get these dogs, want to treat them like 'furbabies" and find that dogs are dogs, pack animals with a drive to follow the leader, or be the leader, in the absence of one. The dog gets too pushy, and so they dump it, instead of getting their heads out of the Victoria Stillwell mire and being a pack leader with this powerful breed.
My second to last visit to the shelter showed me about twelve Pitts, and the majority of them attacked the kennel door every time someone went past it, and that aggression is likely the reason they were dumped there in the first place. It all comes back to breeders. Too often, dog breeding is all about money, not the breed, and if you've got the cash, they've got the pups. As we all know, every prospective owner needs to be screened, to see if they are physically and emotionally capable of owning that breed, of being a leader to their dog. And if not, they don't get a dog.
Too many people get Pitts, Rottweilers, Dobermans, GSD, and other powerful large breed dogs as a compensation for their own insecurity, and get a thrill out of the toughness of their dogs. But then when someone gets hurt, it's "Oh, I never thought he'd do that!". What did they think would happen when they keep a logging chain collar on the dog, let it drag them all over the neighborhood on the rare occasions that it gets walked, and keep it locked up in a small yard, isolated from other humans and dogs for all of its life?
Bad habits only get to be bad habits because the owner of the dog allows it to be so. Too bad that the dogs have to pay the price for ignorance.
Since mankind is the steward of the animals and will have to answer to the Creator, I only hope that some of us can acquit ourselves on that count.
