Richard Gere gets philosophical when he discusses his latest movie – “Hachi: A Dog’s Story,” which is a transplanted American version of the 1987 Japanese film “Hachiko Monogatari,” about a faithful Akita dog that died at a train station waiting for its master. “The story is more than a dog waiting for his master,” said Gere, 59, this week, on his 8th visit to Japan. “It goes beyond the normal sense of loyalty. It is a connection between two beings. There is no subservience, no master and no dog; rather, they are soul friends.”

I don,t know who said it but I,ve always been fond of,

"I can only hope i,m atleast half the person my dog thinks I am."

The above is eloquent!

Here's what Mark Twain had to say: "Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in."

The soul friends is what I love the most in my dogs.

Bob, on the lines of your quote, here is one attributed to Ann Landers:

"Don't accept your dog's admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful"

I was deeply moved at the passing of my friend this year.  My depression fell so far I wan't sure how I was going to put life together again.  If you had told me such a response was coming, that such a deep bond was possible, I probably would not have believed.  Truly that crazy bitch was mo anam cara.  I am still in a bit of shock.... what we are generally taught about the world and how this life works, just may not be the whole story of the mystery.

My dog is more than my shadow, he is there even on the cloudy days.
I wonder sometimes who is keeping who.
More than a child or brother, so much so I take him for granted.
He forgives me but never forgets.
When I grow old and forget my way home, he will show me the way.
Without him I am lost.

Yes, keepthefaith, that was the quote to which I refered. I can play 'fight' with my older bitch, & she will growl, mouth my hands, swirl around into a tizzy, dash back & forth, pounce down at my feet, then race back & charge me, showing her teeth, snarling, barking.....any one watching would think she was attacking....all the time she NEVER bites, or even so much as bruises me with a nail, so careful is she.....& when I say that's enough, she instantly stops, leans against me with her head thrown back, grinning, saying, (I can tell) "That was fun!" Talk about your on/off switch! She'll let my grandkids harrass her, open her mouth, play with her tail, eyes, ears, feet; with a look of sheer joy on her face....but let me whisper, "who's out there?" & she's a raised hackles, softly growling menace, ready to search out & deter....& after she checks it out, she's back to my side, searching my face to see if I still have any concerns. And she's had no formal training, just my home grown schooling.....a lot she just seemed to know. I had a couple opportunities for her to defend me, she stood up & barked in the face of our aggressor, never hitting the end of the leash, never biting, or lunging after them....& of course they changed direction on the first volley of face level barks....(LOL!)...so I've never had the chance to see if she'd take it the next step, thank goodness! She's neat & polite around the house, aloof to strangers, affectionate with family.....& this was the hobby breeder bred WG/Am showlines girl I paid $500.00 for....best $$ I ever spent in my whole life! Nice topline, straight legs, no hock walking, gorgeous expression....she hooked me on GSDs...no diseases, no HD....what more could you ask for? All 'round perfect girl! Can you tell I'm in love? LOL! My only regret was that I never tried to title her, she'd have hit a helper like a freight train! jackie harris
