Have it done when she is getting spayed. The vet clinic should have their own set of letters and number and will have a tattoo log with your contact information. So long as you keep your current information up to date with them, your dog will be able to be traced to you. I work at a clinic and I always recommend the tattoo over the MC if someone wants to choose one or the other. I just tell them, when you find an animal the first thing you look for is generally a tattoo. Everyone has a set of eyes, not everyone has a MC scanner.

She already has a microchip, but I will be getting her tattoo'd as well when she is getting spayed. I will probably register the number with AKC CAR as well as NDR. Along with wearing a collar with ID on it, hopefully those three things will be enough to get her back if she ever gets lost (:
