This is what I take with big game hunting.

4pack

I have been posting on here for years that I have hunted phesant with my GSD bitch and she will even bring me stuff on her own. Once just a nasty mud hen I let go and once a friggin' white swan. Had to let him go too. Don't even get her started on ducks, she is a duck nut!  I like to have her with me when I shoot skeet because she will bring be back the ones that hit the ground and don't break. She must have a soft enough mouth to do that.

She is also a great JRT stand in and will dispatch rats and mice. I run my dogs down a country road and when it's flooded, the field rats have to come out of their holes and I have watched my dogs get 5 in one 2 mile run. Baden has no interest in wild animals, he wont even chase tweety birds or bunnies. I find the females more apt to hunt.

My husband has a friend who had two GSDs he used to go duck hunting.  He told my husband they were the best retrievers he ever owned.  We ourselves don't hunt so I have no idea if my girl would do it.  I have no doubt she could learn!

I like that hunter orange..lol

Hi 4pack,
Never said a GSD is not useful.....
Just that hunting dogs are specialized and have their own place in the dog world.
They all have their particular skills.
I've had a GSD bring me supper,  I've had one refuse to find my deer because I pissed him off...lol
Maddy as a pup caught a squirrel on a dead run once,  no easy task.
She likes gunfire and has to be put up while we shoot and especially when I hunt.

I myself have much hearing loss from so much shooting over the years.   I'm careful with the dogs around hand gun shooting because of that.   Shotguns aren't nearly as bad.

I am sure a GSD would retrieve, but they are not designed for the icy water like a lab.
Duck and goose are winter seasons here and can get very cold on the water.

I bird hunted with Astra, mainly grouse, we do not have alot of pheasants here, she worked close and great in the brush. I too like Steph only hunt what I would eat. This always helps on the food bill. Steph nice mule. Sabin only hunts moles and Jami is still too crazy.
Always,
Cee

No, I'm talking winter.
Ice to break through, wind chill, and a cold wet ride in an open Jon Boat, moving water.
Before dawn till dusk sometimes depending on the place.   The dog may go in after a dozen birds, depends.
Beautiful spot, makes me wish I had moved there instead of here.  I almost moved to the Livingston area all those years ago.   I see now I made a mistake.
Moons.

Yup!!! Big mistake Moons, but Livingston would have been too...The wind HOWLS there all the time, semi's get overturned on the freeway all the time, I got stranded there one time, they closed the freeway for the blowing and drifting snow. I went around and into town and snuck by as they closed the road behind me...and lots of rattlesnakes there in the summer...

The weather out here is much better, they call it the banana belt...apricot trees, pear trees, cherry, apple, blueberries and ohhhh the huckleberries.....no mosquitos where I live and no poisonous snakes....up in the drier areas, there are some rattlers but not many...rarely does it get below 30 above in the winter,, I do chores in my sweatshirt. No humidity....
God's land for sure....
Enjoy your southern humid weather, while I bask in my dry normal weather with nice cool mountain evenings....LOL

Forgot, to say,
Yes I know about the floating ice chunks, I am originally from Minnesota and used to duck and goose hunt in those conditions all the time...I loved it, also laying in a blizzard in a corn field with the honkers overhead...just see enough to shoot....mmmmm good!!!!
