Thanks everyone for the responses! I really appreciate each of them. I understand that all dogs are not cut out as PPD's, just as some dogs really aren't cut out for Schutzhund. That being said, what are the differences in training techniques for personal protection and Schutzhund? Thank you in advance for your responses!

Not all SchH dogs are prey *****. There are still some people who train old school. We want a real dog, who is controlled, but will flat bite somebody. We say, "monkeys grip, dogs bite". Ramgsd has a real dog. I have several real dogs. If they aren't real, they don't eat at my house. There are still some people who train real dogs, and just train inside the SchH rules. I don't care about points and winning. I care about my bitch knocking down the helper and the crowd going wild!! Now that is bad!! BUT, most people have no business with a real dog nor can manage or control a real dog. Years ago, the schH groups were all a little rougher around the edges. Now we have in our group, doctors, nurses, lawyers, an undersheriff, and engineers. Times change. It doesn't mean we all have to change with it. Don't drink the Kool-Aid!!
Brawnson was certainly a real dog. He sometimes didn't want to let Mike in the hotel room after a saturday nite "session" at a trial. I loved that dog. Trained a few Brawnson sons. God bless his onry soul!!

I like your idea von the thing that stands out the most to me is the heart to put there life on the line how many times do schH dogs take a beating during a trial in ppds sometimes one or the outher dont survive

My dog is a PPD. I just happen to, also, do SchH. In most cases, it is more likely someone will need their dog to protect them, than they will win the nationals. That is just statistics. Some clubs do more than routines. Who has been to a "night walk"? They separate the masses. They consist of scenarios unknown to the participants. Bite suites, sleeves, hidden arms, reed sticks, etc. Someone may jump out of a tree to attack, or a group of guys around a fire...they throw something combustible in the fire...for a big flash, then you are attacked, or a well lit area...then the lights go out...mayhem ensues. Great fun!! My favorite halloween party!
