Sunsilver

Hmmm....my vet told me the x-rays would have to be redone, if they were taken without the info OFA demands!  And this was my Toronto area vet, before I moved up here to the back end of the bush!

Guess we're behind the times here in Canada!

The hips look nice and tight in the sockets, but the part of the femur that articulates with the socket looks like it might have a bit of roughness to it, especially on the right side.  (I copied the x-ray to WIndows so I could enlarge it for a better look.) Otherwise, I"d say definitely OFA good.

Hi Sunsilver - I have just enough info for OFA, but not enough info for SV.

I thought the flat area on the ball was normal?

Sunsilver

Nope. The part that articulates with the socket should be completely round and smooth. Otherwise, it won't move smoothly.

Anyway, the picture is rather small, so I could be wrong. Let's see what OFA or the SV says.

Edit: it should look more like this:

Here's your dog for comparison:

But like I said, the resolution is not very good, so I could be seeing something that's not there. How did the original x-ray look?

Here is the pic from OFA's website:

4. Fovea capitus (normal flattened area on hip ball)

So, it looks like his right side might be a bit less than ideal compared to this pic, but maybe he will still get a Good.

I see. Okay, you could be right. Ranger's femurs should have been more parallel, so that area doesn't show on his x-ray. But the whitish border on the ball joint had me thinking maybe there was some excess wear there as well.

Oh, that looks a lot worse than the real x-ray. I just compared the blown up image you have and the real x-ray and it doesn't look like that. That blown up shot is making it look a lot worse than it is. His ball is actually much, much smoother. I will see if I can get a cleaner pic of it.

Here is another pic somewhat closer. If I blow it up more, it gets distorted:

Ah, that looks MUCH better!  Yes, I'd say those would definitely rate a 'good'!  The poor resolution was making the ball joint look rough and uneven.

Sunsilver - look again. I edited it with a MUCH bigger pic. I finally figured out how to magnify it. Took a while, LOL.

Sorry about the confusion. I forget it looks different looking at the originals vs on a computer, LOL. That's why I was confused.

i would give the left hip a good and the right one a fair.  i'm guessing the sv would rate it "fast normal."
i would be interested to hear how you actually come out on this one.  some are obvious one way or
the other.  this one is not so obvious.  keep us posted.
