Hi Darryl,

Thank you very much for your kind comments, both through your post and via text message. We were very delighted with how the show went and we are pleased that our hard work did not go unnoticed by the exhibitors and spectators. We tried to raise the standard of our breed show hoping that next year and the years after we can grow from strength to strength. We hope to resolve the issue of Character Assessments for next year's show as well. I hope you enjoyed the junior handling during the interval as we believe that we are only the custodials of the breed and the kids who performed are our future exhibitors, club members and organisers of a breed that many of us hold with high regard.

Regards,

Becky

Hi Rebbecca

Firstly my comments were not in anyway meant to insult your club or running of the show,I was just pointing out the mockery (your words) that exist both in Ireland and other countries as a result of different systems. My point is i feel that sv judges should only judge shows that are held under sv rules.I strongly believe that we need uniformity for the judging of our breed.Do you think Herr sprenger would get away in Germany with judging without a gun test and awarding excellent to dogs under 24 months.Remember we all have a responsibility to make sure that the best practice is applied when judging our beloved breed and universally the direction is taken from the motherland.

I am glad your show was a success and wish you and your club well for the future.

Julie

Hey Ken,

Thanks very much for your compliments... if you were one of the first around the side of the ring, why the heck don't I have any pictures of you helping us to set up?? (haha) I'm glad you enjoyed the show... we were hoping everyone would have a good day!

Regards,

Rebecca "the boss" Stapleton (and Derek) :)

Julie,

Thanks for the well wishes! Cheers.

Can I assume that you believe everything that is done in the "mother land" is the correct way of doing things? I think the politics we are experiencing in Ireland are universal.

If we do not bring in top class judges, whether S.V. or not, the breed would suffer as a result... so we try to bring in the best because that is what the exhibitors deserve.

Although our scene here is not perfect, we can only try.

Some of us are championing the changes we deem as necessary but change takes time and even Herr. Uwe Sprenger stated that to correct the size of the dogs cannot be done immediately but will take a few years with careful breeding.

By the way... as to the uniforminty in judging... the breed standard is always open to interpretation and, thus, you have judges with different ideas about their "type" of dog (i.e. some judges go for conformation, movement, etc.)

Do you agree that a dog who has less qualities in line with the breed standard but who has working qualifications should be graded V over a dog who has better movement and confirmation and is of sound temperament but does not have working qualifications? This is one of the problems that our judges and our exhibitors are faced with.

Also, I would just like to point out that us folk over here on this wee little island do not have the facilities nor the qualifications to qualify our dogs for a working title... we must spend a great deal of time, travel and money to do so... some of us have taken that step while others try their best but struggle... so then it seems we come down to an issue of money rather than an issue of passion about our breed. As I said, all our Club was able to do was the best with what we have and what we were allowed. It is a shame you were not at our show... you may have enjoyed yourself, even with our imperfections.

Kind Regards,

Mrs. Rebecca Stapleton

Hi

Of  course not all things the motherland  do are not perfect but i think 110 years later there doing a pretty good job.I presume most of the dogs at your show are from German parents which have come threw the sv breed selection system so they must be do something right.

To answer your question

Do you agree that a dog who has less qualities in line with the breed standard but who has working qualifications should be graded V over a dog who has better movement and confirmation and is of sound temperament but does not have working qualifications?

I let the founder of our great breed answer you

Make sure my shepherd dog remains a working dog, for I have struggled all my life long for that aim ." Rittmeister Capt. Max von Stephanitz (1864-1936) ...

Also if you check out www.gsaireland .com you will see that it possible to put working titles on your dog in Ireland.Alternatively you can come over here and to working titles at my own club the GSDL
http://www.gsdleague.co.uk/ .
You know what they say "Were there a will there is away".By the way you can also take part in the sv hd/ed/dna program threw the GSDL..Full details are on the club website.

You seem to be takeing what i say personally.Once again i say to you my coments are not meant to critsize your show or club.

ha ha I did offer to help both on the phone and that morning, and am always available for a good cause,
where can all these pictures be seen?

I would ask for this trend to be used on the promotion and gratitude of the work and efforts that was put into the show it was a brilliant day and was enjoyed by all,  NOT for constant negitive comments which is ruining our breed, and the social atmosphere that once made our shows a pleasure to be at,

Hi Julie,

No... I'm certainly not taking your criticisms personally, but I do find that you are implying that it isn't a true German Shepherd Dog because it hasn't got a working title (lets not forget that some of these dogs are, as well as workers, pets and there are people who are very fond of these pets and enjoy showing them to other people via our shows. This does not take away from the fact that these dogs are still German Shepherds and are loved by their owners whether or not they have important titles). If the GSA were more broad-minded both myself and my husband would most likely apply to become members of their club but after attending one training session some time ago my husband, who is the Chairman of our Club, was left a voicemail stating that the GSA had received complaints about him and that if he were to apply to become a member his request would be denied. How, then, are we supposed to link up with the GSA in order train our dogs when we do not feel welcomed or comfortable within their fold? Also, it is not practical for people to have to travel to England in order to train and title their dogs (especially in the current economic climate where money has become more scarce for many people)... but we, personally, hope to obtain SchH for our own animals in the foreseeable future.

There is a divide. There are some in Ireland that believe, like yourself, that it is not a true representative of the breed if it does not have working qualifications and, unfortunately, those people often look down upon the breeders who tend to focus on aspects such as confirmation and temperament. Also, there are many of the working type dog that I personally would not bring into my yard and do not believe are up to the breed standards that I try to adhere to.

I wish, for our show, we could have conducted the Gun Tests... our Committee saw that as a small step forward for not only our Club, but for the breed as well... but our hands were tied by the complaints. I do agree that we should all be working towards obtaining uniformity (and working titles).

Once again I am not taking this personally and I am enjoying our very open and frank discussion of the differing opinions and it is a pity that more people cannot do this... you are obviously on the other side of the fence from myself but nonetheless I am delighted that we are able to discuss our difference of opinion in a mature and civil way. Fair play to you and a big pity that this doesn't happen more often here in Ireland... maybe if it did some of the differences could be resolved and there would not be such a big split within our breed as well there would more respect for/ from both sides.

Regards,

Becky

Hi Ken,

I was just teasing you... Stavros told me that you had offered to help... thanks for that and fair play to you...  We're a small club at the moment and are limited in what we can achieve with the size of the membership that we have but the more we grow in membership the more our abilities and achievements will (hopefully) grow.

One of goals for the day was to try and create a good atmosphere... we like to think we're a family oriented club (as evident in the emphasis we placed on our Junior Handlers) and we need to bring back the fun that Stavros has told me used to exist around the sides of rings. As well, I spent the last two weeks repenting for all my sins and praying for sunny weather :)

As for pictures... the photographer on the day snapped about 600 frames (he said many of which turned out very well) and is currently putting them on a disc which can be got from him for €20. If you'd like his details send us a personal e-mail or give Stavros a call and we'll give them to you. Also, if you know of anyone else who's interested, please let them/ us know! You probably don't want the pictures I took myself on the day... but for you I'll only charge €50 for about 120 pictures on a disc (lol). The photographer was just another addition we made this year to give people the option to obtain lasting memories of the AIGSDA show, which isn't always available.

Cheers,

Becky

Hi,

Regarding the grading of young animals ie.junior and yearlings excellent, i agree that these SV judges would not dare to do this anywhere other than England or Ireland, simply because they know that we have no proper system in place, so there is no comeback, you cant blame them, when we dont have anything down in writing regarding judges and their interpretations on what they can and can't do in the ring.

      Paul Rattigan.
