My first GSD was AKC registered from German import parents.  Her dam was AKC registered as a black and tan.  In reality she was a sable that looked very much like a black and tan.
I doubt the Germans would ever mistake a sable for a black/tan, but if you are going by AKC papers, they could be wrong.

dcadgsd:;  Yes, your sable came out of two sables...and they can have a blk and tan pup,,usually only one or two , the majoirity of the litter will be sables.  Most sable x sable mating produce all sables..

Silbersee will explain all this when she sees your pedigree I hope...

.I like to hear these kinds of discussions as I have sable and blk/red. , and a black bitch that only has ever had anything but Blk/red but only bred to blk/red with no black recessive on the male side..I am getting ready to breed to her, my only Sable  , Gauda, Dressas brother, who has never been bred and he is 8, red sable or patterned red sable,,,and see , because Hexi has Tiekerhook behind her and three black dogs also in her top and bottom pedigree and 4 sables also...SInce Gauda is a sable...I am hoping for a solid black...dont know yet....but we will see.

.This will be my last breeding ever....I  am hanging up the leashes on the barn door and  gonna enjoy other venues in my life.

. Let us know, Silbersee , what you see in the pedigrees =that answers the question she is asking............:::::

phgsd-yes it seems that AKC is at fault here. That is why I was asking. The owner of my dogs grandsire replied to me and said it was an AKC thing. Sounds like the same thing that happened to  you with your dog. My dogs grandsire was a sable. He just appears blk/red in his pictures.

Yellow Rose,  I actually was not questioning the sable x sable producing blk/tan but rather what color was my dogs grandsire(fathers side). I was a bit confused since my dogs grandsire is listed as blk/red and her granddam is listed as blk/tan(both are my dogs sires parents). My dogs sire is obviously a dark sable color. I was wondering how that could happen if both his sire and dam were indeed blk/red/tan. I contacted my dogs grandsires owner and he informed me that her grandsire(sire's father) was indeed a sable dog. Upon looking at my dogs grandsires  pedigree picture, I can see he has the lighter fur around his eyes that alot of sables have. I then read another color thread about sables on here from a while back that dealt with the same question about the same dog. It makes sense to me now. Seems AKC has their own opinions , which is what they make the dogs' owners put on the AKC paperwork, regardless of what the owner knows to be true. As far as coloration goes, that is.
I also now ,know that my dogs sire carries the sable and recessive blk. Her mother must carry the blk/tan and the sable. So in my figuration, and let me know if I have this right or wrong, the blk/tan pups must have come about by the sire throwing the blk recessive and the dam throwing the blk/tan, hence the blk/tan pup since blk is always recessive so was taken over by the blk/tan gene.
Good luck with your breeding, Hope you get atleast one black pup! Good luck on your future endeavers also.
Thanks for all the replies and help.

I was the owner of Alk vom Osterburg Quell ........ his AKC said Blk/Red ...... although to the contrary his SV Koering was listed as "dunkel grau  .......   braun gewolt"    dark grey with brown markings (FACE).   His DNA is on record with the AKC with DNA profile # V37651       I have had him all over the world and in the states in many high profile competitions ....  anyone that has seen him will say he was a dark sable      Regards ..............  Greg

One more thing with ALK ............... he could never produce a solid black ...... he never carried the solid black gene ......

Yellow Rose, I read thru those threads and find the information and pictures very interesting. Such beautiful dogs!!

Greg- Thanks for chiming in. I was trying to explain without naming the dog so Im glad you replied. No question that Alk was indeed a sable and also very handsome!! Im proud to say that I have an Alk granddaughter!
Also, just to clarify, I wasnt saying that Alk produced blk puppies. I am referring to Alk's son(my dogs sire). The way I worded it because of wanting to leave the names of the dogs out of it, I can see where it might get confusing to what dog I was referring to.
