Cledford,
Scratch pants are in no means to protect you from a bite. I have had several teaching helpers and helpers from Germany tell me about using heavy overalls.
If you say no to carhart then you would have to say no to the apron, which alot of helpers do use. An apron will not help you from a bite. Dog could get you from behind, anything could happen. I am not opposing to the apron.
My gappy pants are nice in the winter and brutal in the summer. Both of my brands of scratch pants would not help if I have gotten a bad bite.

Cledford,
Thank you for taking the time to write such a lengthly and informative review of both pants. For everyones information, I am a novice but not a newbie. I have been around the sport for a few years and have seem many different brands of pants. I wear the "club" pants with I dont know the brand and I am just looking for my own pair since I hope to get certified as a trial helper later this year. Most of the helper work I have done in the past has been suit work. Most of the guys I know wear Schweikert, but they are all much taller than I am (im only 5'7") and not exactly thin anymore. I'm in no hurry to buy, and I do appreciate everyone's input!
