Also, the "local police" did not exist.  I drove from there for 4 hours and only came upon towns with 4 or 5 buildings.  Farms more than 20 miles away and miles apart so no chance of finding a dumpster.  I'm sure the only meals she'll find are ones she'd be able to catch live.  That's why I left food by the road.  Traffic is so scarce, not much chance of getting hit unless at night.  So, hopefully she'll keep going to the road so some kind soul that has the resources will be able to gain her trust.

The human being can be full of generosity as well as  lacking and descency at all. I,ll hope for the best for her... I,m sure she will remember that one person who tried...

The dog looks healthy, and it looks like there is a mark in the fur from a collar.
Perhaps there is a county road just over the hill that you where not aware of and the dog was just wandering.
I've seen dogs easily run fifteen miles from my home before and come home when they were ready.
That might explain why the dog hid from you.
Anything is possible.

I hope you're right Moons, anything is possible.  I just had the feeling that she came to the road asking for help and yet was afraid.  Even if she took off and is lost, she's still in trouble.  I can only hope that she's lost and her owners are doing everything they can to find her.  My call to the State Police would at least give them a clue to her last known location.  And the girl from the government (Park Authority, I think, government vehicle) also seemed concerned, she was also a dog lover.  Between them, let's hope she can be either returned to her concerned family, or find a family who will make sure she's safe.  Yes, we can only hope, but thanks for the positive take on it, brightened the outlook just a bit .

I know here in the national forest just when you think you've found true wilderness there are homes close by, small county roads, some not even on maps.

I had one dog who would travel great distances and be gone sometimes three days, once a whole week.

I think he had lady friends all over the county..LOL

Hopefully this story does have a happy ending.

I talked to a lady here at the hotel I'm in and she said unfortunately, abandoned dogs are common here.  I also called the State Police again and offered to forward the pics.  They said someone would call me, they haven't.  I wish I could have done more, really.  It's nice that you are saying I did what I could but it just makes me really sad that she's out there all alone.  I guess we can't save them all but it sure would be nice if we could save just a few, at least the ones we run across.  I'm also sure any of you would have done the same, maybe even more.

I wish she would have come to you.  I've picked up many a stray and gone to great length to attempt to pick up others, but if they are too shy or spooked, it's very very hard to catch them.  I've spent hours trying, sometimes with success in the end, sometimes not.  I think you did do everything you could, just too bad she didn't relax just enough to jump in your car (a great way to catch many stray dogs even if they won't let you touch them) or get close enough for you to grab her.  Very sad, hate to think about her future - probably pretty bleak.

I love Oregon . I could do with out the rain and wind . Poor dog . I hope it can be caught with one of those live traps . I am glad I was not there or I would have camped out to catch it . Then I would have spent the next six monthes OCDing if I got rabies from the dog . You are right GSDtravels we can not save them all. Try to put the dog out of your mind and continue on your travels with good thoughts . You did what you could for the dog . Don't worry be happy ..

I don't know if you can return where you saw her, but here is my story if it will help. I'm a former mail carrier who saw a dog on my mail route from a distance. When I stopped, the dog would not come to me at all. As soon as I said something it would just get up & leave. That was the first day. For a whole week I saw this dog off & on w/o being able to get near it. I would also put out  food & water. On day 8 I saw her again about 7 miles from the first sighting. This time I got out & as she got up to leave I took a dog food bag & shook it. I poured some on the ground & she came flying over to wolf it down. She wanted more so I put some in my hand, bent down, & prayed she would come this time. She did, ate out of my hand & jumped right in my vehicle. She also had a collar mark on her so I assumed she had either run off from her owner or had been dumped. The tragedy is when you realize a dog has been dumped because they are absolutely terrified of everything. Today she is with me & acts like nothing has happened. She recovered very well. I hope someone if not you can return to find her.
