Ticks are a major problem right now in our area.  Especially after sheep herding, it's really quite disgusting.  When I put them up in their crates afterward I can see the ticks crawling around on their fur.  So I've treated them all with frontline this month.  And have to check myself out thoroughly.  I can't say that I use it on all of them and for every month during the summer.  Fleas aren't really an issue around here.  It's just the darn ticks.   They've even been getting them in my "city" yard, from one darn tree.  I've pulled two off of myself recently, luckily I've noticed it right away and they weren't attached for very long.

I've used both, but can't say that I've really seen a difference.  Advantix can cause a "local' reaction at the site of application, ie:   skin quivers kind of thing.

Thanks Rezkat5,

I found them crawling on my GSD yesterday and then I got all itchy and crawly-I take them tracking  and hiking daily so this is what I have to do-showers twice a day in summer and dogs checked and groomed constantly-they would miss their outings if I hid  until winter !

I live in Kansas and have prairie fields and brome fields all around my home. We track in tall grass and all. I use Frontline every other month with super results. Knock on wood but I have  never had fleas nor have I found ticks on my dogs while useing this product.  I wish we had something for use on humans  :)

i was thinking that too.  Frontline for humans would be nice.  The one I pulled off of my scalp was after a shower too.

And have pulled probably 4 dead ones off the dogs!  I just hate the darn things.

Being in NJ and seeing them all my life it's always entertaining at the vet where I used to work to have a person move here from a state that doesn't really have ticks.   Gotta love the emergency tick bites!   or there was one where the owner thought it was a tick and it was a nipple!

Well,

I should have known better but I mistook the nipple for a tick twice!

The first time- my long haired male GSD just sat and waited until I realized it wasn't going to give but my female  Border Collie let  me know in short order which one it was LOLOL!!

Well, guess you won't be doing that again!  LOL

But, at least you didn't make it an "emergency" visit to the vet!

We use both, Frontline and Advantix, alternating from year to year. We apply it every 6 weeks to all dogs to aid in tick control. No fleas here.

I also use Zodiac spray on the dog before herding training, a squirt up each leg and along the flanks, and I spray some in my hands which I then rub on his ears and cheeks. We've had good results with the Frontline/Advantix as far as ticks on the body go but he does sometimes get an attached tick on his face. A little Zodiac prevents that, and it helps when you get toward the end of a 6 week period.

I also spray Zodiac on my boots and up my pants legs to my knees, and on my hat. Very light applications are all that's needed. It not only keeps ticks away but also blackflies and other flying insects. Acts as a repellant.

Zodiac can be very expensive at pet stores. Locally, they want $15 for a small bottle. I buy it online from revivalanimalhealth.com where it costs $7-something for the same size bottle.

As to mistaking a nipple for a tick, yep, done that. My dog was VERY unhappy with me. I won't do that again  :)  These days I wear an LCD head lamp and magnifying glasses when I'm on a tick hunt.
