Drake looks awesome...Get both of those pics framed when you get home..The second one enlarge it and do a framing with matting , etc..couldnt have posed better if you glued him there.

Death Valley is my husband's favorite haunt. Here are some pics we took a couple of years ago. Incidentally he is off with our male GSD hiking in eastern Oregon right now.

Here is DH and the big boy at John Muir fossil beds.

To anwser questions...Yes, I have a first aid kit, very large one. One very important thing I added was burn gel bandages "second skin". When I was in Florida, my cousin threw Drake's ball when we were taking a rest. His 30' lead was at my ankles, wrapped around and took a couple layers of skin off the front of my shins, OUCH. Very much like a burn, the skin was gone the width of the lead. Put those bandages on and it truly is like a second skin, worked wonders. The only gross thing is, they are perfectly clear so you can see the wound. On the other hand, you can see if it's healing without having to remove the bandage. I changed it daily and was healed up within a week with very little scarring, I highly recommend keeping them in your kit!
The snake is a whipsnake (red racer) and from what I've read, they're one of the fastest snakes in the desert, very hard to photograph! They're also supposed to be pretty nasty, easily provoked and can deliver a nasty bite. I found this one on our way down and had stepped right over him! I was on the watch for sidewinders and knew this one wasn't venomous just by looking at his head. I actually like snakes, caught plenty of them when I was a kid, but wouldn't have one for a pet.
We did not hike golden canyon, more traffic and I wasn't supposed to have Drake on any trails. I looked for the more "out of the way" places where we could hike pretty much undetected
