Why does it suprise you?, this is a pretty not preformance frame of mind. Nothing functional in the top!

I think some of us remain ever hopeful that a VA dog actually will shine in the performance portion.  Or, maybe we are just hopeful that a dog that truly demonstrates that it has the "right stuff" in terms of character, temperament and working ability, will be VA.

I hope someone has a video of the VA dogs' work, at least.  I heard the same thing Uber did (from multiple sources, including show folks) about one of the VA dogs and his belly-crawling.

I'm not surprised about the belly-crawling VA, or that Boy von Zorra was at the back of the line!!
It's the same old, same old, nothing has changed.

You know if you think about it, its not always the highest score dogs that should be bred alot of times you find better breeding material in a average preformance dog. Just goes to show never breed by whats on the field.

thanks Mystere, I don't think I should be ripped into for thinking the VA males should have better performances.

I will be the first to tell people, I have never been to a dog show.  I have been to plenty of working trials and working regionals.  I guess I expect the showlines to be judged on the same level as the working dogs.  I know they will never be.
just a working line person trying to be a showline person I guess.

i think the VA dogs are trained to pass pretty much. the performance exam has nothing to do with how the dog places in the ring other than that it needs to pass in order to get into the ring thats pretty much it. then once in the ring it depends on how the dog looks overall.

I too keep hoping that someday the showlines will do as well or better than the working lines at the protection phase. Just like I keep hoping that the working lines will someday show up in the VA listings just as often as showlines. In other words, I hope the showlines and working lines differences will become minimal someday.

Somebody's going to tell me to dream on or get lost, I know. Don't waste your time. Some of us have to keep hoping for that or function and form will never come together.

I was just told to "dream on".  So I shall.

I am certainly "no expert" on the Shows, but from my perspective the VA's are the TOTAL PACKAGE.   They are not as strong in the Performance Tests as the Working Line, but their performance is certainly commendable -  PLUS they are Beautiful !!   I have a young dog sired by one of the VA's on the list above - he is everything I want in a German Shepherd.

Maggie, Did you see all of the VA performances? Did you see the dog described as "crawling" through the exercise? Is that what you saw, as well? Would you say that the performance was comparable to what you've seen at club trials? Congratulations and Good Luck with your pup! May you have many wonderful years together! :-)
