If you have time, small cubes of cooked liver are great and much healthier - we try not to overdo the hot dogs (and have come across a few dogs that do not like them) but they are covenient and probably do not do much harm in small quantities. (I have a couple of dogs that love raw carrots, even peelings, when they are in the kitchen but I do not think they would be that keen to work for them!!)

I do give carrots as snacks in the house and two of three will eat them.   And my girls LOVE their green beans.  Ike won't touch vegetables, no way, no how!   He's definitely a meat/cheese kinda guy.

I mainly used the hot dogs for tracking and some obedience.   I will also cut up blocked cheese for training.  Only because I'm a spaz when it comes to spitting hot dogs.  much better at spitting the cheese cubes!  LOL

I do use a nice cold carrot for teething time, but I don't think it would be so great for tracking!   I do try to buy the ones with the least amount of chemical crap, but I only use about 1/4" of a half-inch slice intermittently along the trail so I doubt that they are going to feel any bad effects. I have also used cheese bits as reward in obedience; all my dogs ADORE cheese.

If you are giving your dog hot dogs for a treat, better have Hodie or YR explain to you how to do the Hymlick (sp) on a dog. I came very close to losing one dog with hot dogs, it got stuck. Better make sure they are tiny, tiny pieces. Same goes for using a carrot.

carrots?  holy cow - that's the first I've ever heard of that.

I used to use hotdogs but my son got mad at me for giving the dog hotdogs - said the nitrites would give them cancer - he's a natural food kinda guy.

Now I  buyy rolls of natural dogfood, slice like cookies and then cut each "cookie" into four pieces and put them in a resealable sandwich bag.

If you don't like the junk in hot dogs and your dog doesn't think carrots are a great reward, try small chunks of string cheese. It's lowfat mozzarella cheese.  You can cut it (or hotdogs) into tiny chunks for your baitbag or pocket. My dogs will work for either one, but not for carrots. What are they, bunnies?! I don't think so!

ahh yes...good old string cheese.  but, I still can't spit that very well!   So, hence the cheese cubes.   I'm such a spaz too, can't have anymore than two in my mouth at a time either!
