DebiSue

My girl has a very sharp high pitched bark when she is frustrated or wants something like her toy or just general communication in the house.  I just figured it was her puppy voice as she is just now about 6.5 mo of age.  Recently we had her out front just chilling in the evening breeze when she saw something that she felt needed to be announced.  My husband and I just looked at each other in shock because our little squeaker had let loose a big ol' deep GSD  bark.  Couldn't help but smile.

Oh and Mystee, a friend has a Mal puppy and until he let it out of the crate I thought what I had been hearing was someone's rat terrier.  They do have the shrillest non stop shriek I have heard from a larger breed of dog.  When he let her out I just cracked up when I saw her.  Cute little bugger and very demanding.  I liked her.

My dogs also have different voices for different occassions. Both male & female have high pitched 'talking' voices, in the house, or to express need, or just to point out to me that they are there, as if I could forget! LOL! But when they have something serious to bark about, they have a real big GSD bark! All except for our one little pup, now 13 months old, she was our runt, & has had the deepest, huskiest, 'booming', type bark since she could bark. Her very first bark was a big deep bark, was very surprising, coming from such a small body! That's when we knew we were in trouble! She has been hell on wheels ever since! Good thing we love her! jh

Like many others, my west german male has two barks, a vey irritating high pitched bark he uses for exitement and sometimes to tell me he needs a walk, and his deep GSD voice to warn away strangers or other dogs. Our female (rescue, unknown background) mostly uses the deep bark, and for "talking" she moans and cries.

My male has a very big bark when he's "protecting" the house, but it's definitely more of a "play" bark on the schutzhund field.  My one female doesn't neccessarily have a deep bark, but it's a pretty big bark.  Her alert barking is getting more intense as she gets older.   My older female probably has the most range of barks.   Her alert bark is very deep and gutteral.   All have the typical GSD whines though.....

Yeah, they whine a lot for such big dogs, drives me nuts sometimes.
