My advice would be to talk them into another breed. As one of the brachycephalic breeds- dogs of this breed are basically deformed. Quite literally. Buying one only encourages the practice of breeding deformities.
If they insist on a Boston, recommend that they only consider pups from a litter that has a lower COI than the breed average. If a breeder doesn't know the COI of the litter, they better RUN in the other direction.
Finally, if they must have a Boston they should make sure to get a PET QUALITY pup - one whose muzzle is longer than the show ring calls for - in that event the dog will have a fighting chance to be able to breathe easily throughout it's life.
This of course is my opinion

I think Boston Terrors are GREAT dogs, well bred ones are a ton of fun and kind of cool looking to boot! BTs would definitely be my choice for a smaller house dog. They might want to look into BT rescue organizations too.

We have three boston terrorists! and love them to death. They are fantastic little dogs with drives comparible to a good schutzhund dog. Therefore are not the breed for everybody. Hopefully your in-laws will do their homework before going out and just buying a puppy. Really talk them into buying from a reputable breeder that tests their breeding stock for all the problems that go with this breed. (there are a few serious ones) If they can get one from a really good local breeder where they can view the parents of the pups and get help throughout the b.t's life then I just can't imagine them being disappointed. I wish them the best of luck.
