I would absolutely prefer a prong or a flat martingale to a choke, but you really shouldn't be using any training collar without the assitance and advice of a trainer. Using a training collar incorrectly will only cause more trouble.

The Halti and Gental Leaders use pressure points.  The dog can become afraid to move.  These are based on the old style horse war bridles used on truely rank horses that would try to kill you.

animules, not trying to start anything, but I really want to know about the pressure points on Halti. I have used it along with pinch (show one for when young, they are smaller and gets snough of thier attention). All of my dogs have been trained on both halti and pinch, also my finger nails to the back of thier neck. I never want them to become collar sensitive, so they never where a collar in the house My 11 month I have to watch, If I correct him and one of the older dogs pass by, he wants to fight them, he just can not believe I would do that to him, So I have to tell them to leave and correct at the same time. He is a pistol, no fear. My Rottie has always been the guardian, now he lets the youngen do it and depending on what Bark depands on wether he can be bothered to get up. Back to the halti, I find the redirection of the placement of the head very helpful at times.

kemaris,
Walking a puppy with a nylon collar is fine but its time to do some obedience training.
Decide what kind of training you want to do before changing to anything else.
What you decide will have an effect on your choices.

The gentle leader types of collars apply pressure points over the nose and where the neck meets the head.  The structure of the collar is the same the war bridle used for extremely rank horses.  If that princple is enough to stop a rank horse from injuring somebody, think of it on a dog.  I watched a lady put one on that was not adjusted correctly, she had her young dog writhing in pain and didn't have a clue as to what was causing it.  Would I personally ever use it?  No.

Obedience training, getting the dog focus, positive reinforcement are good places to start.  Not nagging corrections where they get numb.  You can end up with the same problem with a training collar or pinch collar if you do not use it correctly.

JMH, others have their opinions too,
