There is no excuse for not cleaning the dog's run, nor for neglecting his nails. In order for his nails to have gotten so incredibly long, he must have lived in that run 24/7, with no exercise...That's a crime, by itself. Even an hour a day of running would have kept his nails worn down. I know this because my family rescued a Collie that was in somewhat similar condition, at least with regard to the sores and the nails. It took us several months to get his nails back reasonably short, and sadly, the deformities are permanent.
This old dog deserved better treatment.

They are also evidence that the officer responsible for this obscenity is not fit for duty and should be fired with no pension.

I agree, Michele, but they shouldn't stop there. If one of us was caught treating a dog this way, there'd be fines, jail time, and maybe even a ban from every owning a dog again. The handler in this case should face all of this, and on top of that, so should his superiors. After all, the dog is property of the county, and they should be making sure that the property of the SD is being taken care of properly. If not, they need to shoulder some of the responsibility.

I am on the committee of the Islands Police K-9 Relief Fund for six years-it takes care of all the needs of retired 4 legged K-9 Officer's that go home with their handlers as they all do here on the Islands.
I would take that dog and the one I saw in another post-the 4 year old female:(
