It might be more common than one thinks, just not paid attention too as much as there wouldnt be any reason to truly supervise. My neutered male sure enough made a tie with my female. I too was surprised. Didnt last as long as a regular breeding tho.

That warning came from a friend who's been breeding and showing Cardigans for about 30 years, so she knows her stuff!
My bitch tends to panic when she can't free herself from the tie, so I have to supervise until Mr. Hot Stuff has cooled off enough to let her go. Even then, she sometimes pulls hard enough that he yelps when they separate.
So, I have to keep them apart during the standing heat period. It's a PITA, but at least I don't have to worry about an unwanted litter, if they DO manage to get together!

Hopfully the Vet would know and inform you if there was only one testicle visible... as a complete castration should have been done to remove the retained one as well, and would be a more expensive surgery.
As far as humping goes, I've an alpha bitch who humps the boys sometimes, and my lil Tibbie humps the boys when she's in heat. Kind of a combo of dominance play, hormones, and a bit of "I used to wanna do this for some reason, but I don't quite remember why...."

Castrated dogs can still get preform. The question is how long ago was he castrated. He can still impregnate a female for up to 3 months after castration.

A qualified veterinarian would know whether or not a dog was cryptorchid. It would be a special surgery to remove the dropped and the retained testicle as well. However, as your dog is 2, was neutered a few months ago, he may just be feeling the urge :)

My neutered 13 yr old certainly knows when my girl is in heat, especially around day 10. He wasn't a late neuter, and never bred a dog.. but he still knows. He doesn't get extreme.. he can be called off and told to stop or go lay down. But they certainly practice the whole courting ritual except for the tie! When it's time he still gets the urge and instincts tell him what to do. I doubt they messed up your boy's surgery, but he's still a boy at heart :o)
