You can go overboard with it though if you continue in one spot. ie: a serious bald spot...

I bought my Furminator off of eBay for $40 or thereabouts. With that being said - I have gone back to using a shedding blade, undercoat rake and slicker brush (pin brush).
I just felt like the Furminator was cutting the top coat hairs and I wasn't pressing very hard...just going over the coat lightly. In the end, I just wasn't happy with how my female in particular was looking - very thin coat etc. My male has a thicker coat and the Furminator worked well on him.
For those of you that mentioned a comb. Is there any particular comb that you use that you like? I just ordered my new slicker brush online and love it. It has a button that I depress and the pin needles retract so I can clean it very easily!!! Just wondering if I need to incorporate a comb into the grooming regime of the shedding blade, undercoat rake and slick brush.

(I have been brushing him everyday! And still everywhere and everything and everyone wears his dog hair!)

Like any other tool, the FURminator is great if it is used correctly. It does not damage the coats of my show dogs.
I usually loosen (even back-coming) the hair with a rake that has very long, rotating teeth--doesn't rip the hair out. Any large clumps, I pull out by hand--sometimes, use a shedding blade.
I always finish off with the FURminator. The key to using it is not to dig into the coat as if you were using a "mini-cultivator". Just drag (using very little pressure) the tool along the coat--in the direction that the coat grows.
The FURminator is particularly effective in removing the loose hair from the forelegs during a massive shed.
For a GSD, I use the medium-sized FURminator.

It reduced the hair in the house considerably.
I take my dog out in the driveway and just show it to him and he comes right over to be combed.
I don't think it's cutting his hairs.
I bought the medium one last week off of ebay for 22.00
