There's nothing wrong with a white GSD, I had a wonderful female that I rescued.  She was an amazing dog.  Like any other breed when bred specifically for color , structure, working ability or any other single trait something has to give.  Yhe white GSD I had was a wonderful dog with a great temperament, I even certified her as a pet therapy dog.  She had an uncanny knack at recognizing children with disabilities.  She would walk up to them and let them lean and hang all over her as she supported their body weight.  In the future I would definitely consider getting another white GSD.

Our local all breed club had a demo done by the State Police K-9 a number of years ago... His Bl/Tn worked wonderful, and durring the question answer afterwards... someone glares @ me (as I had whites) and says "The Cops would never use a WHITE though would they??"   the Officer asked why not... and he says "Cause they'd be too easy to see!!"  and the cop calmly answered... "by they time you see the dog it's WAY too late"

Years later a pup from my male became K-9 Kodi with the Bristol Ct police force...  Others have done Herding, Tracking, Obedience, Agility, Schutzhund, Dog Sledding, Therapy.  In otherwords they were GERMAN SHEPHERDS who happen to be white.  And while it may never happen that German Shepherds born white colored can be shown in conformation They do quite well elsewhere.   The Swiss White Shepherd came from those same bloodlines back 20 years ago.  Rani Von Finn was one of the earliest exported to europe, as were a lot of dogs from Hoofprint and Regelwise.  Great to see them being shown in international conformation shows... but  sad to see the GERMAN SHEPHERD name and basic standard dropped to have it happen...   just my opinion.

The nice thing about having the German Shepherd name dropped is that, for the majority, the whites...both show and working lines...have a uniform and functional structure :)

"Here is an interesting article on White Sheperds working with the Germans as Scout Snipers in WWII."

Wait a minute.

What makes you think these white dogs were German Shepherds?  The "tail straight out behind him" sure doesn't sound like a GSD.  Does anyone here have a German Shepherd of any color who can while standing still hold his tail straight out behind him?

And the soldiers said they were medium-sized dogs, not large,  and the article says "medium" means their hair was short and they were lean!  Uh.....c'mon now.

Not knocking white GSD, but really, I think there's quite a bit of fantasy going on here.  The Germans are so anti-white GSD that they ban not only the coat color, but splotches of white and any dark dog who even produces white hairs, plus they hate the white GSD so much that after the war, when the breed is decimated, even then they won't allow them, yet we're supposed to believe that this same government had these super Pointers, uh, I mean white GSD, doing an excellent job for their soldiers but they forbade themselves to breed more of them?  So they had some white GSD, the dogs did a great job, and then the Germans would be like, oh, too bad, no more left.

It is my understanding that from the inception of the S.V, that the colour white was an allowed colour until the early 1920's. It was finally deemed unacceptable for two (2) reasons: (a) the dog was nearly invisible while herding sheep in the snow, and (b) the presence of the dog was too obvious when it was walking with a policeman.

As stated above, the white GSD is NOT an albino animal with all the frailties such animals possess. I guess that one could see it as "special" as the occassional long stock coat GSD. The white GSD does not meet the long-established S.V. standard and probably never will. But it can certainly compete in the A.K.C. ring as well as other kennel club rings.

The dark sable to wolf sable colours are the dominant and original colours of the GSD. From that viewpoint, our modern black & tan, black & brown, and all-black dogs might be interpreted as anomolies rather than the norm to that we are accustomed.

"But it can certainly compete in the A.K.C. ring as well as other kennel club rings."

Not true.  From the AKC GSD Standard:  " A white dog must be disqualified."

They can, of course, like other purebred dogs with breed competition disqualifications, compete in non-conformation events such as Obedience.

That article on the White shepherd sounds completely bullshit. Suddenly it is hard to see soldiers in the desert ???? Who is supposed to believe this shit ???

Tess310, thank you for that addendum. I should have been more specific in regards to qualifying my statement. In addition to the A.K.C. most kennel clubs do have specialty rings for obedience, herding, tracking, etc. for that these dogs can compete. As far as I know, the only national breed club that recognizes the white GSD as a separate dog breed is the Swiss Kennel club - there may be more that I do not know about.

All the member nations within the FCI recognize the Whites as the BBS.  My female, for example, has NHSB papers.

Not true.  From the AKC GSD Standard:  " A white dog must be disqualified."

This is what I was talking about, Ive read this countless times, automatic disqualification.
